I have a bunch of midi files I need to render into audio. What is the highest quality Gm/GS playback synth or other app on OSX for that? Simple is good too. Does anyone even make General midi synths anymore? As a plugin?

Mac osx has a built in sf2 (soundfont) player, under the included AU effects.
Just find a great, free GM soundfont to dl, then use that.
It should be the last AU in the list there. It's the only instrument (non-fx).
Apple Music Device...or something.
That's just for sounds.
Of course you would load the midi file into your daw to play it.

I have a few good GM sf2's but I'd need to did them up off a backup to see their names.
I do remember the MerlinGM sf2 was pretty good, and a small size too. Try that one. The AirFont one is good, but pretty large.
here's the gm sf2 page at hammersound

Here's some other gm sf2

Don't know of any, but maybe I'll do some searching, and post something.Dewdman42 wrote:ok. So nobody makes a plugin or program that can do GM/GS without digging around and finding sondfonts, etc?
Just remember, you could find a cheap GM hardware sound module on ebay or someplace else.
