I made these tutorial materials for a customer, looking to get a rock/pop powerchord tone using the Evolution Electric Guitar Strawberry sample library for Kontakt, so I figured it would be useful for everyone else, too.

Here is the download for the MIDI files, MP3 output, and NKI presets: http://www.orangetreesamples.com/downlo ... alysis.zip

Here's an explanation of these files:

The first example uses the Evolution Electric Guitar - Strawberry lead guitar component preset. The second example shows how to do the same thing using the rhythm guitar component preset. Both examples use the unmodified "Alternative Crunch" preset in Guitar Rig 4.

Here's a description of the files included:

Example 1 - Evolution Electric Guitar: Lead Guitar Component

Powerchords Ex 1.mid - MIDI file with the note data, to be run through the included EEG lead guitar preset in Kontakt.
Powerchords Ex 1.nki - EEG Kontakt preset, with the layers set up for this guitar track. Put the NKI in EEG's lead guitar folder with the rest of the patches.
Powerchords Ex 1.mp3 - Output MP3 audio.
Powerchords Ex 1 Mix.mp3 - What the example would sound like in the mix.

Example 2 - Evolution Electric Guitar: Rhythm Guitar Component

Powerchords Ex 2.mid - MIDI file with the note data, to be run through the included EEG rhythm guitar preset in Kontakt.
Powerchords Ex 2.nki - EEG Kontakt preset, with the strum palette set up for this guitar track. Put the NKI in EEG's rhythm guitar folder with the rest of the patches.
Powerchords Ex 2.mp3 - Output MP3 audio.
Powerchords Ex 2 Mix.mp3 - What the example would sound like in the mix.

And finally, in "Powerchords Doubletracked.mp3", I added the two examples together, panned apart to the left and right (this is called double-tracking).

Awesome! This should help out a lot of people! However, I can't seem to download it. The download will reach about 1 mb, then end. When I try to open the .zip it says that it is invalid. Hmmm... Strange.

The zip file should be 1,231,503 bytes large. Which extraction utility are you using? I just downloaded it, and it works fine here.

*Sigh* . . .I hate Internet Explorer... :(

Greg, that was a sweet riff, it's so simple, but it's an awesome chord progression!

Thanks, Greg :-).

Could you also explain how you can trigger THOSE chords in chord mode? I mean when you take the beta preset and you hit the same keys, you play "normal" chords. So how did you do that? And why are there only 3 of them in the power chord demo(or maybe it's just me?!).

They are some custom voicings--I just assigned them to roots to make things simple. These are specific voicings that only work in this key, since it uses open strings.

What I'm planning on doing is entering in these cool, rich voicings in as alternate voicing 3. They'll probably be centered around "guitar keys", like E and A. If you need them in another key, you can just capo or detune the guitar (just like a real guitarist would do). :)
