using two keys in one 8 measure melody? Is that possible? What?

Chords, scales, harmony, melody, etc.

This is a question for you music gurus. I am writing an ubran groove song. Typically, such a song starts out with an attractive 8 measure "chorus" melody, then goes into the rapping for 16 measaures, then back to the chorus.

QUESTION: I composed the 8 measure melody. The first measure starts with a Fminor chord. Second measure, C, third measure F chord. I thought I was playing in Fminor key. But then it sounds really nice to go to a straight F chord in the 3rd measure. Maybe I am not playing in Fminor key. Maybe I am playing in F key, then just adding an Fminor.

I also have Gminor and Dminor in the same melody. So maybe I am composing in F, and it isn't a big deal to add an Fminor chord for effect.

Is this getting confusing? In any case, the sound is nice using both Fminor and F in the same 8 measures. That OK?

If it sounds good it is good. I do that all the time.

I'm no theory pro at all, but I'd rather consider this a substitution chord and no key change which is totally fine.

For example, this I know by chance because I was learning it on Keyboard some time ago, Marillion's Garden Party uses D/A/Am/G in the main part and they sold quite a few records. :)

Besides this, I agree what jupiter8 says.

;)

(Personally, I'd definitely encourage to try what you describe and any thing much weirder that you think of!)

I often use just the D key and the A key ;)

But yeah, what jupiter8 said. Season to taste. Let someone else worry about the theory.

Sometimes theory can only dissect the living squid of music into pallid cartilaginous tubes. Although of course much ink might be spilled.

No reason whatsoever why you can't -- matter of fact, it's considered hip to do so in certain academic and avant-garde circles -- so feel free. Tonality needs to share its throne anyway.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!
