USB connection kit for iPad great but how long is the battery going to
Last running multitasked synths etc?

No way to charge and use midi at the same time

Not until THIS http://iconnectmidi.com/ is available

The Camera Connection Kit won't power anything that draws more than 200mA anyway. Anything else needs it's own power supply.
Meh.

Wicked, thanks for that.

I think I read that the latest IOS 4.2 even limits the power way less than that, 20 ma

It's pretty dire now. Things that worked without a powered hub two weeks ago no longer work without some source of power. And some powered interfaces still require a powered hub (not sure why that would be). I've tested a lot of things out since the update and gotten mixed results. For MIDI, a newer model Uno works fine on my iPad, no external power necessary.

My main concern is the battery drain.

The ipad really needs to be charged while using midi so the iconnectmidi looks like the answer.

Price will dictate.

I hope it's not priced like the GuitarJack. $200 for a single 1/4" (and an unbalanced 3.5mm mic input) is hard to swallow.
Meh.

Sure, no chance i would pay that.

What is needed is a dock-connecting audio interface with MIDI. Powered with a wall wart if necessary, I don't care. Something like the Tascam US144MkII, but with a dock port. Why doesn't this exist yet?

The iPad is more than capable of productive MIDI and audio work, and it's definitely sold well. Why no one has come out with something like this is beyond me.

Or something like the Akai synth-station with audio inputs and switchable landscape and portrait mounting for the IPAD

running on a wall wart to power the IPAD

Or better yet, a dock-connecting audio interface with MIDI via USB, USB in for USB mics and phantom power via XLR, powered with a wall wart or optional battery pack .

Then you've got a truly mobile iPad solution - use any microphone, USB or non-USB, plus any class-compliant USB MIDI controller anywhere for as long as the battery pack holds out. Mono in for audio would be OK - stereo would be great .

Even if the battery pack only had power for 3-4 hours use before recharging it would be brilliant.
