I am looking for a selection of the best and most famous DX7 sounds.
I know there are thousand of banks in the internet.
But I have not the time to hear 100000 or more sounds to select the best sounds. Does anybody knows banks with a best of DX7 selection?

Go to the Dave Benson website and download his files;
my folders show a lot of 'Best of...' type banks (guitars, basses, piano etc)

Just take the original Yamaha banks ( Tx and Dx ) and you're done.

There are no gazillions Dx presets on the internet, its just a myth. Almost all ( 99,90% ) are duplicates or personal selection and rearrangements of the Yamaha original banks.

The Benson collection is a good tip.
But it has too many sounds.
The best bank seems not to be a "best of" bank.

I have 77 banks of DX7 patches. That's like almost 5000 patches at 64 patches per bank, if I recall? Personally, I can't stand them, but they are with my collection of SY-77 patches, which I adore.

Sure I have even more banks than this somewhere on a HD. Now just listen to the patches inside and tell me how many original patches you'll find in them besides or reorganised selection of the Yam stuff and poor edits of the same Yamaha presets ? (like MASS presets generated whilst using random generators found in some old programs who could edit the DX ( Atari, or even commodores amiga etc)

I lost some days of my life to try those, and I even started a post on Kvr where everyone having shared the same experience than me seems to fully agree

Making decent FM patches requires more work than just turning random knobs while expecting happy accidents, maybe thats the reason why ? dunno

You can do a lot with FM. But all these evil banks on the net, well I don't know. If the OP, or some1 else has the courage to do it, we'll have some more insight on this

You can't get me to even bother or care about them. I have a Yamaha TG-77, and the only patches I care about are the TG-77 built patches, period. It's nice that they load in DX7 patches, but I could care less. It's a night and day difference in what the 'mothership' of FM synths did (OK, arguably the FS1R is the 'mothership', but I owned then sold the FS1R, and I've kept the TG-77, so that's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.

I was bidding on a tg-77 last week; while running the cables for rack stuff I already have I was thinking..wtf! Which led me to breathe a sigh of relief when I was outbidded..and I bought alchemy instead. dumb or smart move?

Dumb move in my opinion... well, not about Alchemy. Certainly wouldn't say anything bad about it. But the TG-77 is an awesome sounding unit... especially the, ironic as it may be, the Alchemy bank.

Listen for yourself. This is the factory sounds. There are even better patches out there. I have about 250+ banks for it if you want them if you get one. They go for about $200-$250. Almost all the used ones are beat up, dead light kit, numbers rubbed off the buttons, misaligned buttons, needs the battery replaced, etc. The one I bought though was in excellent condition, the buttons were perfect with its printing, but it had been restored with buttons being realigned, the light kit being replaced by the company that sold the light kits directly, the battery replaced, vacuumed out for dust, and I think that was it. I couldn't ask for a better unit. And no, I won't sell it.

Just pay attention to my problem list. This is the only synth that I actually bought three of before I got the one I wanted. I returned the first, sold the second to a friend, and kept the third; it was that important to me to get a mint one. I rejected multiple units for months before I finally got the one I wanted. I love it, but then again, it really was the SY-99 (I know, different synth, but still Yammy) that 'got' me into synthesis in the first place.
