Since there was some excitement in the air on the new UAD entry "Studer A800" i've taken care to create a small fx chain (reaEq + Ferric) to emulate the Nebula Studer, using as "sample" the audio files posted in the "famous" thread here:
http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/equi ... t-out.html
So here we have two files,A and B, one was processed with Nebula and the other with my FREE chain...Peak and rms values of the two files are matched within a +/- 0.1 dB: which is which?
File A:
http://www.box.net/shared/hzcgh598zl
File B:
http://www.box.net/shared/n2vesi81x3
Here you can listen to the original file and to the one precessed with UAD.As said in the original thread UAD studer simply is unable to reduce the crest factor without udible and unpleasant distortion, so with UAD you can't obtain the same rms value of the two files above without breaking with the peak values, so i excluded UAD from the test...

wow, so close. I pick A as the better sounding one to me, but it's really so close that I'm sure it wouldn't be a "make or break thing" either way you went.

Edit: nevermind.

I'm going to guess "B" as the free chain.
I'm trying out the UAD Studer presently, and while I really like the sonic character of it, I have noticed it tends to slip into farty distortion rather easily. I get the idea it's definitely more of a subtle-use plug-in, not meant to be driven too hard, but still getting used to it.
Good job at matching the files, btw!.

To me it sounds like there is some phase anomaly in the kick drum of B example. That also gives it a bit different sounding punch.
I consider A more natural (original like) and overall the better in this test. However I don't think B sounds bad/unusable either.
cheers

Well A and B are not that far from each other. I cannot say I prefer either of them so I'll just say that they are close each others. B have inversed phase compared to the original and A. After compensating the phase and timing of A and B there still were some differences in bass and highs so I'd say there is some slight smile EQ on either of the tracks as well. I still can't say I prefer either of them though. both punch trough better than the original so both would get the "louder" job done.
I know C was out of the comparison but listened to it anyway and it is distorting. The waveform looks all wrapped on the kicks so that was no subtle treatment done there.

Don't like one of them btw. Never liked Ferric so that's no surprise to me. Which R2R program did you use? Was the audio input level high enough? Did you add TB+ tape saturation? When yes how much?
