i mean like the kind of thing keith emmerson used to play. but for the iphone, so i can control logic synths via wifi. i'm assuming this has to exist already, right? pretty basic. tho i guess i wont get much more than an octave of finger sliding on an iphone screen.

out of necessity for work ive just moved from the gordon gecko-sized nokia brick that i had for years, up to an iphone, and cant actually think of many things i really need it for, but this would definitely be one of them, and searching on here has revealed nothing with the word ribbon controller. any suggestions appreciated.

also, while i'm here. the one other thing i'm interested in using the iphone for (also very basic) is programming rhythms when i get an idea, which i can then transfer to logic as midi files later to work on more seriously at home. if i remember right, beatmaker would easily fulfill all the criteria, but is that the only serious contender? anything better suited to my needs out there now?

and if i want to sketch out a quick melody, can this be done on beatmaker too? dont see myself composing seriously on a phone just yet, but sketching ideas, yeah definitely.

sorry for very basic questions (especially the last ones), but i have looked fairly hard for the ribbon controller thing, without any success. perhaps i'm not using the right words?

EDIT: looks like the interface/controller part of HandSynth would give me everything i need as far as a ribbon-type controller goes, but if i understand correctly its not a midi controller, just a self contained synth. so although the controller part is perfect, it can only control the synth's internal sounds. a shame. there must be something out there like this which is (or can be used as) just a controller. no?
Signature blocked until somebody convinces me they aren't utterly pointless

For sketching out ideas, I'd say go for Thumbjam. I love it. Perfectly ok onboard sounds and very easy and fun to use, takes advantage of the special iPhone features like accelerometer and gyroscope in a good way. You can also use it as a MIDI controller which is great. You can switch to a 'continous glide' mode which works like a ribbon controller, I think. If you get it, try the 'trombone' instrument for example. It's even better on an iPad but works fine on the iPhone as well.

Some other apps to check out for getting down quick ideas: nanostudio, isequence, and Multitrack DAW for piecing together loops you've made in other apps.

I'm waiting for Beatmaker 2 which should be out pretty soon, but it seems like it's the most popular option for making beats right now.

thanks. ive DLed thumbjam and it looks like it'll do what i need.

will probably give beatmaker a go too. tho i'm not sure i'd really make use of whatever extra features they'll add with BM2.

same goes for nanostudio: no doubt impressive, but probably not how i want to make music right now...

...though u never know.

thanks again
