What's going on with the timing in this vocal track?

Chords, scales, harmony, melody, etc.

I've been trying for a while to evenly divide this vocal track in my DAW, so I can add some synths, maybe some drums. But it's just... I dunno, I can't seem to do it.

Is this what you would call polyrhythmic? Because the timing of the notes is not consistent. Then again it's probably just some kind of improv track?

A. It's not polyrhythmic.
B. Classical theorists would call it "Rubato" or "Ad Lib" (Ad Libitum) which mean "robbed" and "at liberty" respectively. Robbed means that time from some notes are taken from others - usually this means that a measure is roughly the same length as is would be normally, but notes are "pushed ahead" or "pulled behind" where they normally occur to give it a sense of speeding up and slowing down. At Liberty just means "freely" - how you want to do it.

It is "in rhythm", it's just that the rhythm is very free.

Rather than being lazy and uninventive (by stealing someone else's melody), why don't you come up with a melody that has similar feel. If you want to add drums (which would totally ruin the character of the original) you can write yours in more strict time. It will be much easier to accomplish what you're trying to do, and you'll actually learn to "compose" rather than "assemble".

Best,
Steve
