Hey, there,

I just got the email (well, a few days ago) about the SSL Duende plugs going native.

How's the quality of any of these?

Could any of theme be a go-to version of that effect type that you could have if you could only choose, say, one compressor, eq, track plug, etc?

They are very good but very expansive

If you want top notch plugins, Flux do a lot better for the same price :

You can find some really good plugs for cheaper, like Fabfilter

The packs are very good with both

Modern GUI, innovative functions and very good sound.

I tried the demos and was expecting to be totally blown away (because of teh hype). Long story short, I was really disappointed. I prefered stuff in my arsenal over every acclaimed 'stand out' plugin.

Nothing special. I'm not nostalgic about old brands either.

Drumstrip - 159 Euro - Kind of cool, but transient designer outclassed by SPL, plenty of alternatives for lo end boom

and to top it all off, a proven resource hogging codemeter protection. I think SSL are smoking crack or think their shit really doesn't stink.

And just to add, flux are equally overpriced lard also. In fact their most useful, easy to use plugins, are their free ones. Go figure!

i dont protection is the correct term any more. i think its just another useless dongle that doesnt do as advertised.

sorry for the laugh but i spoke to jim SSL (i think it was jim anyway) about this a few months back and he tried to convince me that this codemeter was great and wouldnt be broken...

The single prices are bad. They want you to get the bundle. I wouldn't get it because I have it all covered. The protection is crap. X-Verb is a high quality reverb (unlike others people usually mention as alternatives), it's far from "not bad". The other plugins are also very good and some of them that seem to have decent alternatives, well, they're much better than the alternatives. I think people expect a "wow" kind of impression that in most part can't be had by tools like these in the first place. If you want a real "wow", there's some hardware that will give you it instantly, but that's usually in another price range than this entire software bundle for one type of processor.

Average plug-ins, expensive, buggy, plug-ins with wrong implementation (some findings at Gearslutz about the EQ and wrong response curves).

I would stay away from SSL native this time. Eventually if SSL has released another version with the bugs fixed. But also when all is working as expected, the plug-ins are not state of the art today. There a better competitors.

I really liked the compressors, especially the drum channel, but then again, I wouldn't see myself shelling out for it, most of these bases are covered, as most have said.

I couldn't believe I had to reboot my Mac just to try out a demo, though! You don't have to do that even with iLok these days! Sheesh...

The findings of guys from Gearslutz about the wrong EQ response curve.
I cannot verify this behaviour because I removed SSL because of other bugs. Anyway, if this is true it will not really help to get a good reputation for this new plug-ins.
(SSL knows about this and they will have the team looking into some of this issues)
