teardrop massive attack samples?

Can anyone help me with the sound at the very beginning of Teardrop? The sound under the drums and harsichord after that seems to be vinyl noise. The faint string sounds a bit later as the piano chords start seems to be tremelo strings.

It's them being creative. You might try to copy that.

My guess is that it's reverb/distortion from their sample. Unless you mean that atmosphere-ie sound that happens at the VERY start of the track? I think that could also be very wet reverb with high diffusion and a highpass filter, which is then automated to wear off. That's also a guess, and I don't feel like powering up my music computer to try it. Experimentation is key.

I'm about 90% sure it has something to do with reverb.

Arguably, using looped samples isn't very creative, which is essentially all it is. Next time, at least attempt to be more helpful.

Thanks jlocri. I did mean the sound right at the start. I am interested in replicatng the style rather than this specific song. I usually patch synths rather than mangle samples - I want to expand my horizons with regard to sound making. I know that the trip hop style makes use of a lot of heavy compression (particularly on drums) which can create confusion when trying to analyse how sounds were made.

I was the guitarist on that album the noises were me... I used a cello guitar and walked backwards and forwards from the monitors to create all the long notes (and other noises). Thats what I'm good at.. Spike was given the full backing track... I know I was at the mixing stage in the studio, same with the whole album.

@JeiShian NS10's are you're best friend, they punch the mid range, sooo Gibson 175 (Cello) guitar they feedback badly but by using a speaker with a distortion plugin (I actually used and amp in another room then fed that to the mic then the NS10 in the control room) and the guitar will resonate to the tones acoustically fed by the speaker.... Move forward for more move back from the speaker to let it sing... Takes a bit of practice but it means you can control the harmonics and also how angry you want it to sound... I hope that helps.

@GyuBeats The P-tools tracks should not of been released but Neil (producer) was offered shit loads of equipment if the company could use it for demonstrating their new equipment at show (I think Namm), in the understanding it was under lock and key, And of course that meant nothing as it was copied by somebody, once out nothing you can do....

Sadly, Angelo died in 2023.
