You should really look to build a solid foundation, out of experience working with melodies and harmonies that are known to work, instead of looking for tricks or particular formulae to get you out of a jam.
Listen, emulate, play, analyze what you found/discovered. It doesn't often happen overnight. I know that having the technology encourages us to be in a hurry to 'produce', but take your time to discover as much as you can before trying to force the issue.
Instead of 'working out' a melody, you want to get to where you HEAR a melody, over a pedal or drone, a chord, a chord sequence, whatever musical climate works for you. If you understand from experience more possibilities, they will occur naturally and it will be more like play than working out.
& when asking questions, you'll tend to get more/better results if the question is about some particulars.

I heard an interesting interview (sort of) with Hawksley Workman. What he does is to grab a set of bongos. He'll try singing different things with the lyrics he has, without any instrumentation- just the bongos to lay down a simple beat. By doing this, he doesn't get bogged down trying to think about chord progressions, instrumentation, and so on. A pure focus on melody/chorus. I've never tried it myself, but it makes so much sense.
