I'm watching the stream of the fireside chat with some Google Android developers at Google IO and decided to submit a question about the audio latency problem in Android and it was chosen by the moderator. :) This is close to what they answered (notes taken by some guy at ZDnet:

"Audio latency being addressed? Yes it's a big problem, hope to address in ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich, that is next version of Android). It's a complex problem. Most latency introduced in drivers and so on below Android. CDD Gingerbread had some 'should hit x latency goal' items."

I really hope they can do something about it.

Post

Doesn't sound too encouraging but it's good they're at least thinking about it.

Post

No, I really wish they would take this problem a little bit more serious and start to push the manufacturers into doing it right.

Post

I wish they would as well so we can finally start moving AmpliTube, GrooveMaker and VocaLive over to Droid!

They'd probably take a lot of heat for this, but I'd love to see google mandate much stricter conformance requirements for Android hardware and drivers. Right now the wide diversity of Android hardware just looks like torture for serious audio app development. Apple is still way, way ahead in this respect.

Which won't be out until Q4 this year.

I think I'll stick with IOS for now. This is one case where Apple controlling the hardware seems to be paying off.

The problem is, in the grand scheme of things, realtime audio is not a high priority for Google since it's a niche. They have more central problems to solve. Apple kind of got here for free. It looks to me like a lot of the audio stack of OS X just got ported over.

This thread and the comments from the android team just drove me to buy an ipad2. I have a droid phone, and an iMac for my recording studio. I plan to use the iPad2 with Amplitube and iRig, and for portable demo recording. I think Apple has a good 2 year lead on Android in this area.

I think you are right. For music applications the iPad(2) is unbeatable right now. Even though I hope the OSC/MIDI apps will get a lot better soon.

You won't regret it! I agree I was all Android but when it comes to audio the lil Droid can't hang. Now I have an iPod touch I use just for the apps. I also think google is going to let that 2 yr gap grow a bit before they even start to really address it.

While audio apps on Android etc are fun, they are 15 minute wonders. Ive a few demos but never use them much.

I am on Gingerbread and the latency is alot better..About 3-4 apps on the market that are really good music apps with a couple at 96000 24 bi. Some company is going to blow up because the pro audio/android market is still barren. If I had good pro audio IOS apps developed I think it would almost be worth working with Google/Android to fix the latency problem because the first one to the market is going to be the next Angry Birds of portable pro audio.

They might be at 96khz internally but I guarantee that's not what they are playing back at. Android doesn't support that rate.
