down tempo/nocturnal style r&b n hip hop

I'm fairly new to making beats so excuse me if I'm a little uneducated here.

but i've been trying to compose tracks with this smooth nocturnal feel to them and i havent been having much luck..

I'm having trouble finding the right chords to put the melodies together, I've tried major chords n minor n they both seem off.. they dont really get that vibe i'm going for..

heres some examples:

^ I know thats sampled but it hits the vibe im going for perfectly.. but i couldnt tell u what chords are in there off hand.. so if anyone can, it would help.



^ a good composed example, much more up tempo but u can still feel that spacey kinda vibe..
