Another question for the musicians out there

As I've stated before in another post, I'm developing a trance gate. Currently it has 16 steps. You can set the length of the steps, but the step lengths will all be the same. Within each step you can set the audible note length. The audible note length can be different from step to step, but the actual step length is the same through out the 16 step loop. You can also choose how many steps you want to use 1 - 16.
Sorry about the lengthy description, here's my question. It has been suggested to me that along with having the audible note lengths different from step to step, make each step able to have a unique length, to help with creating shuffle patterns and other different patterns. I like that idea, but I've been thinking, is 16 steps enough? The fastest step in musical notes is 1/64, which is pretty darn fast. Is 16 steps enough? Theoretically you could have a pattern where every step is 1/64 long.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

I don't actually know what a trance gate is, but I can sorta imagine what you're after; if someone wants a swing value, which won't be such an exotic desire really, you might want a number that factors 3; for instance 48 might be a more useful resolution than 64, 24 might be more useful than 32...

Will the step length be automatable?

I'm just not hearing shuffles in trance music ever so I question the value of it all.

hmmm....
So I think I'm going to be around the 32 - 64 steps total. If you want let's say 48 steps, you simply select 48. So as long as I have more than enough steps, then great.
I've tried automating the step value, what you end up with are the dreaded snaps and pops. I have yet to figure that one out.
I understand that trance doesn't exactly have a lot of swing in it. This plug in isn't simply just for trance music. I called it a trance gate in my description so that others would have some idea of what I was talking about. Its a sequential step gate with adjust gain, attack, decay and note length. I want it to be as useful and flexible that I can.
Also before I forget to mention, I have also included dotted note values.

yeah, I was looking at the idea as an object, I wouldn't know specifically what happens in tarnce or not, just that 3 would be a number I wouldn't want to lose with a configuration of something that steps in time...

It's simply a volume gate that can easily be set to a rhythmic on/off sequence via the interface. The application is that you can hold chords, basses, or leads down and they will be rhythmically broken up (and synced to the host bpm) according to the pattern that is set by the user.jancivil wrote:I don't actually know what a trance gate is...

I see. I would think the attack thing, note length etc should be something you can alter on the fly with controllers... a single effect would be monotonous for me.
