Hi to all challengers!
Normally I'm not one of the first (or even the first) when voting has to be done. Fortunately I burnt all the tracks to a cd. So I could listen to all the great songs being on the road for four hours this afternoon.
First of all: Wow!
Exclusively great entries in this challenge. And an astonishing variety of different sounds and styles.
I thought it would be impossible to get only five tracks out to vote for. But there are some tracks that I got almost stuck to:
5 points: IrionDaRonin - From Daydreaming to Reality
This song is so wonderful dreamy and emotional. I just loved it from the first time I heard it.
4 points: Branis - The Tannhauser Gate
As I said before, this reminds me of the better days of the german 90s Techno label EyeQ Records - but without being a copy of that!
3 points: Hemmick Reef - Tyrellisaurus Rex
Can't say more: I'm caught by melody and sound!
2 points: Cycling on Tyrell's surface - Stonail
Much air and clean performance. On german TV there is a program called SpaceNight. This track fits perfectly into the soundtrack.
1 point: Doc Jon - Freak Me Out
This is driving and pumping! Though the bassline reminds on something...
Sorry, I have no more points left. These songs would have got some more points (in no particular order):
bstageboss - Night Race to Arecibo
evo2slo - biomechanical god
Mike Leghorn - Isle of the Dead
Yeager - What the Fugue
Mulperi - Tyrell
...
All tracks in this challenge make great use of Tyrell.
Good luck to all!
Gerald

Wow! I didn't realise how much variety there would be amongst the entries, but picking 5 to award points to was a struggle. The number 1 place (5-point) song was a no-brainer for me, it felt like it was in a league of it's own, but a couple of times listening through the whole list only short-listed 12 tracks for the other 4 places, and after 3 or 4 more runs through that dozen I only managed to marginalised half instead of two thirds of the short-list.
I guess what it boils down to is that this is a great playlist of music, REGARDLESS of the fact that only one synthesizer was used.
Below are my picks.
=====================================
5 points: PocVocem - Vulcan Jazz
What can I say...?? Simply EXCELLENT! Worth paying for!!!
------------------
4 points: Stonail - Cycling on Tyrell's surface
Closing my eyes while this is playing is like an out-of-body experience
------------------
3 points: JoeCat - Another Industrial Accident
About half way through this song I started visualising the artificial respirator and the beeping of the heart monitor, even BEFORE I really had a second chance to think about the title. Simply a fantastic use of sound. Very creative melodic collage!
------------------
2 points: IrionDaRonin - From Daydreaming to Reality
What a "haunting" melody. I'm on holidays from my day job at the moment, so I'll be making the most of this tune on repeat for my midday naps over the coming week. The stuff dreams are made of -- pardon the pun
------------------
1 point: Yeager - What the Fugue ?
I initially wasn't sure whether to love this or hate it, but when the percussion reappeared at 03:02 and I became aware of my subconscious foot-tapping, I found it VERY DIFFICULT to stop. Definitely the sign of a "keeper", I think? (...or some kind of degenerative neurological disease...)
------------------
I'd also like to throw in an honourable mention for 2 songs which made the picking the last (1 point) position a very time consuming component of this process, and they are:
elipsis1 - myoplex
evo2slo - biomechanical god
Damn you guys! I would be looking like getting an extra half-hour of sleep tonight had you both just settled for one entry this month instead of two...!!!
=====================================
Great music guys... everybody, that is, not just those above. And once again, a big thanks to Urs Heckmann for making such a fantastic synth available to the entire community.
Regards,

I've come to realize that the real "challenge" of this OSC is picking favorites. Lots of great tracks here. I've really enjoyed just listening to the various entries and find it very difficult to switch to that other part of my brain for the ranking and rating part of it. But there are some sweet prizes to be won, so on with the show!
5 Points: Doc Jon - Freak Me Out
I have a feeling that by the end of the summer this song will be heard everywhere. Out of car windows, in the clubs, be hearing it so much you start to get a little sick of it. Then you don't hear it for a while and one cold winters day your shuffle picks it up and you are reliving the summer of 2011 all over again. Great track!
4 Points: JoeCat - Another Industrial Accident
This track really drew me in. Incredible sounds - the respirator, that sharp snare hit, the transitions - wow. And the composition is so well arranged. Room for everything to breathe, but still so lush. Can a song be too good?
3 Points: TommyBear - Where are you
Strangest thing. Started playing this and suddenly I was weightless and floating up into the air. Luckily I was inside so the ceiling stopped me. I could have been seriously injured if I had been out riding my bike or something. Be warned!
2 Points: Branis - The Tannhauser Gate
Great sense of space. Mesmerizing percussion. Can listen to it again and again. Plus, I'm a sucker for Blade Runner references!
1 Point: IrionDaRonin - From Daydreaming to Reality
That ping-pong predelay (or whatever it is) that comes in with the plucks at around 1:30 is so perfect. Brilliant song. Loved The Saddest Goodbye too. I'll admit that one made me tear up a little (no, there's just something in my eye, really). Was tough for me choosing between them.
Big shout out to my runner ups: bstageboss - Night Race to Arecibo (those lead guitar bends are so tasty) Stepiton - 9:00pm (glad you didn't use 24 hour time and call it 21:00 - would have made for a long intro!) Hemmick Reef - Tyrellisaurus Rex (truly epic) PocVecem - Vulcan Jazz (a journey I will be taking often) Acronym - Radium (Hear that? That's the sound of me slapping myself for not picking this!) Alright, I better stop before I name everything. Good luck everyone!
Oh, one more thing, that middle section of Gorgorgathgorgorgor - Night of the Nanozombiez is haunting me! I can't get it out of my head! Damn you Gorgorgathgorgorgor!!!

Hi everyone. Voting will be a project for me
I need more time.
I've decided I'll download everyone's track and load them to my iPod, and play them in shuffle mode (to eliminate the order of tracks as a factor).
Rest assured, the sound quality on my iPod (iPod touch, 3rd gen) is decent, paired with Etymotic HF5 ear phones. Granted, not as good as my home system, which consists of the HeadRoom desktop amp (including DAC), fed by my Airport express digital out, using Sennheiser HD800. OK, I'm bragging -- but I just want to let everyone know that I value good sound, and will be a qualified judge
I'll be happy to have all this good music on my iPod!
Mike

I think we - as producers, amateur and otherwise - gotta assume our listeners aren't always playing back our music on optimal devices. At least you're not listening on laptop speakers! I wonder how pro producers feel when they realize half their audience is listening to their work on a phone? I'm guessingmleghorn wrote:Rest assured, the sound quality on my iPod (iPod touch, 3rd gen) is decent...
I typically boost any low-freq or subby bass tracks a bit at just under 1k hz - right at the point where it starts to punch through on crappy laptop speakers, but enough outside the mud-zone so it doesn't effect the mix elsewhere. I've noticed it's especially important if that bass is all that carries the progression, else the listener loses it completely. So far it seems to work. But then again, I'm not selling anything on Beatport
Good luck in the OSC!

Another very impressive set of submissions. I've whittled my list down to 13, will have to be ruthless to get it down to five.

I'de love to vote, but 31 tracks is seriously too many. Maybe the numbers could be trimmed a bit with future competitions? Like 10 max.

10 max? Sorry, but i'm not agree with this. Nothing good in leaving people out if they want to participate and making music.andrewthomas10 wrote:I'de love to vote, but 31 tracks is seriously too many. Maybe the numbers could be trimmed a bit with future competitions? Like 10 max.
I could understand if you don't have any time because you are working or taking care about children, but this sound like lazyness thing mostly.
Hint for 'without-time' people who would like to vote:
- -Use the Soundcloud player for playing all tracks continuously.
-Mark in a notepad only which do you like while listening them.
-From these new list, listen only those and choose 5 which you love so much.
-Put in order of preference.
Or in case you are not at home so much:
- -Download the all tracks Zip file
-Upload the tracks into a MP3 Player.
-Listen to tracks on street or wherever.
-Mark in a paper or cellphone only which do you like while listening them.
-From these new list, listen only those and choose 5 which you love so much.
-Put in order of preference.
And i hope you took good my comment, there is not bad intention in it.
Have a good day.

I'd really like to vote. But it's like the Eurovision song contest with the number of tracks.
There ain't a heckuva lot of people voting here. I'm only trying to improve things. I'm sure many are feeling the way I do.
