There are a bunch out there but I'm not sure which one will work ok for me.

What is important is that it can record two seperate tracks (using an external audio interface) at the sasme time (a single stereo track seems to be common but I need to record two seperate instruments at the same time.)

Looping - while not a requirement could be cool. If it can handle midi as well - even better. Some basic effects would be nice - reverb, delay, compression, EQ. Ability to load other audio formats like wav, mp3,etc. would be neat too. Of course being able to export the complete piece would be a requirement.

I'm not trying to replace a DAW - just trying to come up with a basic scratch-pad to take around with me to work out ideas.

I do have Garage Band but not sure if it's possible to record two seperate tracks...

Thanks for your suggestions!

I think for audio only Multitrack DAW is best, since it works really close to. a DAW.
I use it myself.

with MIDI I think Apples Garage Band is really powerful and the next thing to a DAW.
While NanoStudio, Electrify and Beatmaker 2 are more groovebox like. aka sample arrangement, not really to make long recordings.
Different concept but also powerful.

I did not work with studio.HD though but the app descriptons looks like loops based.

cheers.

Will Multitrack or Garage Band record two separate tracks (inputs) at the same time?

I was looking at Garage Band but didn't really see where I could edit the midi. My first feelings with it are that it's limited...but then I hear a lot of people saying that it's actually pretty powerful. guess I need to find a tutorial on it and see what I'm missing...

You should also look into Meteor, which seems to be the most powerful DAW for the ipad at the moment, especially with the upcoming new features: http://the-palm-sound.blogspot.com/2011 ... tures.html
I have no idea about recording two input sources at the same time, as I don't use an external interface, but mail the developer and ask if it looks interesting.

Meteor looks pretty mighty indeed!.

As for Recording 2 Channels:

every audio App that supports CoreAudio is (should be) able to work with a class compliant USB-Audio Interface (=driverless) via the Camera Connection Kit from Apple ($30). This lets you record 1 stereo signal or 2 mono signals at the same time.
So CoreAudio-capability is the buzzword for you to look for.

Yep - know about the CoreAudio deal - also have my camera interface and an audio interface (Presonus Audiobox USB). I know I can get stereo audio into say Garage band...but I need to get two separate tracks recorded. I play Stick and one side is melody - the other bass. So if I'm sketching out ideas it would be nice to have each part on it's own track.

Time to contact some developers. :)

Yay, Meteor mentions MIDI clock. At long last!!! :)

I can't comment on most of it, but the Meteor video add-in has been very useful for me. I seem to get glitches in the sound occasionally when recording, but otherwise it's been good for basic laying down of audio tracks.

yes you should.

EDIT:

I rememberd my wife has an older USB Class Complient Edirol interface. So, after some testing recording 2 seperate tracks is not possible in Garage Band f. iPad.

I am waiting for thing from Audio Damage since it's coupled DC meaning it can also generate Control Voltage for analogue gear like e.g the MOTU can.

So I've been asking this question of developers and several have responded.

Multi-track DAW can do this. Unfortunately no reverb or delay at this time.

Garage Band cannot record two seperate tracks. I don't see how you can edit the internal intrument tracks after recording them. On the Mac version I believe this is possible...

Meteor. The developer has yet to get back to me. The features are a bit cryptic saying you can split a stereo track to two mono tracks....do they mean split a stereo file to two tracks? This is what it means to me. As for recording two individual inputs to two seperate tracks....unknown. Anyone currently using it care to test this?

StudioMini XL At this time no. But it is high on the list of features and might make it into the next update (one is scheduled for next week...it won't be in that one). Developer seems very enthusiastic about it.

Studio HD Records one track at a time according to their documentation. Also limited to 3 minutes of record time since it records to system ram (faster response this way).

So the search continues. Meteor looks very promising if I could only get the recording question answered...
