Hi there!
Hopefully somebody on this forum can help me solve what key the ibiza classic 'madagascar' is written in.
the notes used in the main riff are:
D,D#,F,G,A,A#
i know it could possibly be many key's but what are some of them?
Thanks for any help given.
Kris
PLEASE Help me figure out what key this song was written in

{another case demonstrating how the piano roll is no good basis for understanding music theory principles}.
"D,D#,F,G,A,A#

You can't know that because it isn't so. You are I guess confused by these note names, which aren't useful. There isn't going to be more than one possibility given only these six tones.
D Eb F G A Bb note how the letter names are consecutive as per the alphabet. that's called spelling. when you have a row of (up to) 7 tones this is how you look at it.
I don't know the tune. If the *home* note is D, you have D phrygian mode. the key signature in that case would be the same as Bb major, two flats, Bb and Eb. D Eb F G A Bb C: D phrygian.
I can't tell you without hearing it. 'Key of' tends to be concerned with harmonic usage (involving chords and how they relate to "The I chord", *home*). Key of Bb indicates the central, home note is Bb.
(There are in all seven 'church' modes for all of the 'diatonic' seven note scales. These seven modes of a row of seven tones will share a key signature if one is required, but each will have its own *TONIC* or central tone.)

I do not know the song but it could be Bb or Gm for starters, that's just looking at the major and minor scale though. That's where I would startkrisroberts wrote:Hi there!

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

I'd write that as D Eb F G A Bb.krisroberts wrote:the notes used in the main riff are:

Better avoid using sharps if the same note is already used (except when it's clear that note is not part of the scale) so I replaced the sharps with flats so the whole alphabet is utilised.
These notes are the plain Bb major scale, starting from the third note in that scale. But without hearing the whole context it could also be the G minor scale or whatever other mode that fits the scale.
