I have set zen.homePath to a custom location on another drive and last time I updated Zen I managed to break it somehow, only uninstalling, deleting everything (including presets) and re-installing helped.

Pretty sure it was a stupid user error, can't remember exactly what I did there.

Just to be save next time I update,
is there something I should pay special attention to when updating Zen with zen.homePath set ? Can I do a normal update install and simply point the installer to the zen.homePath path (this is also were the .exe and all other Zen files live currently).
I'm on Win XP SP3.

What happens when you run the installer in "update" mode:
- the new Zen.exe and ZenDaemon.exe are copied in the specified folder (default C:\Program Files\Big Tick\Zen)
- the new Zen.dll is copied to the specified VST plugins folder
- the new skin/default folder replaces the one in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Big Tick\zen

As you can see, neither your presets/ folder, nor your zendb.s3db database file are touched - regardless of their location as defined by zen.homePath.

So, to answer your question:
- just do the normal update install and you should be fine. You can always backup your s3db file and presets/ folder if you don't believe me :)
- the only thing that may happen, if you modified the default skin, your changes will be lost. You can avoid this by renaming the "default" skin folder, and changing the skin name in the zen.properties file. However, in this case, your modified skin might not contain all the information required by the newly installed Zen.

Thanks for the info.
