you are throwing quite alot into one pot and it doesn't work comparing them.

The apps's feature lists mostly specialize the App already in what way they are intended to be used. So what can be recommended depends on what you want to do.

Beatmaker and Nanostudio are more MPC-Sequencer Style.
You have Samples that you can arrange MIDI-Style.
you can record but it's only good for samples to arrange them
not so mucn for whole sessions.

Multitrack DAW ist a audio recording only DAW app. No MIDI.
With Region handling like the big DAWs.
There is another App like this called
Meteor, and it's also very pwoerful.

Music Studio is the a (General) MIDI Sequencer. No Audio except the included instruments.

GarageBand can do Audio Recording and MIDI and is in this respect the most complete app but with a strong emphasis for songwriting musicians, since you cannot edit MIDI-Notes, only record them.
Thoug you can record and arragen anything you like of course.
But the included Sampler is very simple.

Studiotrack is the most primitive off them all. Only suited for live recording/rehearsing with yourself or others and no graphical repesentation of the audio.
It's like your old 8-track tape machine with overwrite-insert points.
Nothing more to it.

mindnoise, thanks for the reply.

I looked at Music Studios site and it seems to be able to record to audio with a mic.

Which apps allow note editing?

Post

Hi Hemmick,

ah sorry I did not notice that Music Studio V2 has "new" Audio Editing and Mic Recording features.
I did not use it in a while.

So Music Studio, Beatmaker and Nano Studio can edit Notes

I cannot get Garageband to let me edit notes, though.

You have an iPad, I guess?
:)

Also, don't forget FL Mobile.....

IMHO if you are wanting to make music internally (no external synths/guitars...etc) then Beatmaker 2, Nanostudio or FL Mobile are all good.... just really personal needs and preferences.... Read about them, check out their forums and decide for yourself... I don't have time (maybe someone else does) to do the research for you....

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, just got an iPad 2 for the family and thought I'd check out the music making potential. I've just downloaded Music Studio lite to get an idea of the app recording power and although I'm use to Cubase 5, I think that the apps have great potential and it's nice to restrict the recording processing for a change.
one aspect that I can't work out is how you can use an independent synth app and sync it to one of the multi trackers. Also how you can monitor and play along with a track?

If you have an external keyboard with MIDI connection (DIN-type, round one) you need to buy an iPad/iPhone MIDI interface.

like MIDI Mobilizer II from Line6 or any other iPad MIDI interface.
also from IKM, Yamaha or Somnia Wireworks.
I only have teh MIDI Mobilizer I right now, which works perfectly.

or if you have a USB Class Compliant (aka driverless) USB MIDI-Keyboard/interface
you may want "Apples Camera Cennection Kit" to user your gear.

Edit.

If you can do Multitasking depends on the individual app.

Some synths can be run in the background or can be controlled by virtual MIDI ports. But only if BOTH apps support this.

As it now it's it's possible to do. But by no means any kind of standart.

here is some overview which apps support what:
