Any plans for Octopus

Hi guys,

Are there any plans for Octopus in the near future? I'm looking for a great FM synth and I just wondered if it features in your update plans.

Post

I am also looking at Linplug Octopus for my FM synth, but I think I will wait until the next integer update, version 2. So, any plans? Octopus is 5 years old already, so it's time to bump it up with some new features. I would really appreciate a nicer and simpler interface yet being extremely powerful and flexible! Please include even more unheard of, out of this world presets. I really like the presets in Octopus.

Post

Hi guys, thanks for your interest. We currently have no plans for version 2. That a product is 5 years on the market does not mean you have to add "features"; I know this is common practice to keep the money rolling, but its not our practice. In fact we currently work on the next version of another product of us which will have less features (and much higher usability). More is not always better ;-)

Why don't you have a link to linplug in your signature? :-o Now i have to t-y-p-e the url

I applaud this kind of mentality as I'm sick of the constant stream of updates from some companies that mean I either ignore the update or never become really intimate with the software.

...though now that I think some more about it, I wouldn't mind if some devs did feature free updates where they just updated the audio engine. It never occurs to me that Octopus needs that though. When I was looking to buy an FM synth I felt it sounded much nicer than FM7.

Thanks zerocrossing,
we actually got some embrassed users who wanted to see frequent updates; however, I think it needs to be very well thought. An update just to fix bugs is something you clearly like to see, but honestly we'ld rather like to see no bugs in the first place. I think frequent updates are good when some kind of software is in a process of growing, which usually is the case when a new DAW/Sequencer/Tracker software appears, for a plugin - if its not a particular complex one - i rather prefer to deliver it finished and with as least bugs as possible. Interestingly we seem to have achieved this with both MorphoX and now relectro. The bad thing is that its not good for sales  ... as you dont get as much press coverage when you not frequently update your software. Anyway, this is how we do it :)
Thanks again,
Peter

I'm sorry if I have to be offensive, but personally I think your posts I quoted above are more or less just meaningless marketing-propaganda blabla.

Generalizing sweeping statements never make much sense.

If you have e.g. a synth that has a chorus and a delay, but no phaser, then such an effect surely would be a worthwhile addition which clearly improved the product without any kind of negative 'side-effect'. If you think Octopus is 100% complete, then so be it, but you should be able to say it without making cheap stabs towards those among your competition who have a more humble opinion regarding their own products and hence strieve to continously improve them with updates. These updates may even be free b.t.w.. Regarding Octopus, one of the main competing products received several major updates within many years without any of them ever having been a paid one.

I happen to think a much more elegant reply would have been to ask 'what features are you currently missing in Octopus?' If Octopus is really perfectly complete, as you appear to think, then the reply should have been 'none'.

Post

Ah, no I not think any of our products is "perfect", however, I think that many of them are i a state where its questionable if new features would make it better (or more useable). But I see that one can have different opinions about this, no problem and I not found your post offensive. And you are also right that my statements could be seen as speaking bad about competitors, that was not my intention. I however believe that our "few updates" policy (combined with delivering a certain "complete" instrument) also makes sense for many people.

Post

Fair enough.
