miscellaneous questions about RMV

I have just installed RMV (64-bit version): so far, so good, but I have some questions:

1) When inserting this instrument in my host (Sonar X1), there are three choices of VST plugins:

RMV 32-0
RMV 64
RMV 8-20 64

I inserted RMV 64, and it seems to work well, but what are the differences between the three choices?

2) In a loop synthesizer, when I select a slice, how can I determine which of the pads that the slice uses? There appears to be no identification displayed. Similarly, how can I identify the sample that the slice uses?

thanks

I'll have a crack at answering but I'm in no way an official LinPlug voice.

I think for N° 1 the options relate to output channels but I've not experimented yet with that part of it.

For N° 2, RMV is exceptionally flexible about what you put where. If you load a loop in one of the Loop tabs then you can play/stop it using the two buttons about half way along the window towards the top.

If you click the "L" on the left the lower half of the window will switch to the loop browser - choose your loop and it'll show up in the top half of the window. If you click on th "I" you get access to a slightly different sort of browser that allows you to load up individual samples. If you load up a loop and then hit "Play" in your DAW the loop should start up automatically, no MIDI needed.

You can also trigger slices within a loop. Each loop is automatically analysed and the beats marked. In the time line that runs under the main loop waveform you'll see a series of "slices". Click a slice, it'll highlight in white and just below the waveform you'll notice a small box of controls that has a letter/number in the bottom left hand corner - D2, C1, C#1, etc. those are the MIDI notes that trigger the slice.

I'm guessing that there is a way to swap individual slices within a loop but I've not got that figured yet :)

If you are using the "Pad" tabs (with a loop loaded as above) then your loop will play and you can also load the pads up with sounds. Each pad has the same letter/number as for the slices mentioned above - again these are the MIDI notes you use to trigger the pad.

Where it gets fun is that you can also load loops into pads. Click the pad, on the left you get Pitch, Envelope, etc controls with a list at the top of the samples being used on that pad - e.g. OrganPerc4.DAT. To the left of the sample name are two arrows (left and right) with a small folder icon in between, hit that icon and a browser window opens up on the right listing everything that can be loaded into the pad. The list is categorised by type and near the bottom of the list is "Loops". You can audition the loop using the small play buttons next to the loop name. To load a loop into the pad double click its name.

You have upto six slots per pad so can make an unholy racket if you load all six slots with loops, though RMV comes with a good selection of what I would call "partial loops" - loops that feature just cymbals, just bass, etc so you can build your own groove and trigger using MIDI.

I hope that helps in some small way. Peter will surely be along at some point to correct and clarify :D

Anzoid:

Thanks for the thorough reply.

I think that my second question demonstrates that I didn't understand REX files. I have since educated myself somewhat, and my understanding is that a slice in a sample does not consist of pads, like those which may be used in the pad player/editor. I now understand that a loop REX files is a single continuous sample that has been divided into slices, and that actions can be performed on individual samples.
