Folks , i have a question
" Make Up " does same as " Output Gain " on compressor?
Some compressors have " Make up " and same compressor just have Output Gain.
I have Compressor but i hasnt " make up " . So instead of " make up " , can i use " output gain ?

Six of one , one half dozen of the other ......
Nomenclature may vary but the schematic and signal flow is what counts ....
heres a good read for ya

especially see the appendix for a nice historical perspective .
If you dove into the dynamics processing water , be patient .... pretty deep sometimes , but lots and lots of fun too !!!
Good luck

It is, in theory. Bear in mind, some output gains are located directly in the input stage (i.e., mpressor) or right at the end of the sidechain filter (i.e., ReaComp in Feedback mode, IIRC), which changes the way the compressors act and sound.

output gain is not per se [the setting called] "makeup". if there are both, there is a reason for it. makeup gain *makes up* for the compression or gain reduction. it would depend on the design how you'd regard that component. if 'output gain' is all you have, of course that's whete you have to compensate for any reduction in gain, but you may have to use a high number vs someone's idea of '0', say.
for instance a compressor might have a toggle that treats output as makeup, and the behavior is notably 'more so'.

SO guys , if there is no make up , could i increase level with output gain right and it wont crack the quality?

I think one thing that might be throwing you off here is that some compressors have an "auto" make-up gain setting, which calculates and automatically turns up the output based on the threshold and ratio settings. Otherwise, in most cases turning up the make-up gain is the same as raising the output level.
I'm not sure what you mean by cracking, but if you turn up output or make-up gain on a compressor, you are using it the way most engineers do---to increase overall loudness while trying to reduce the possibility of distortion from large dynamic peaks. In other words, you are using the compressor as it is usually used.

Thanks . I bought Fab Filter Pro C and it has no Make up Gain or Auto Make Up Gain.... But i watch other compressor VST on a tutorial and it has Make Up Gain , they turn on make up and sound is rising but i have only Output Gain to rise . So i turn on Output Gain . If i do sth wrongly , let me know again please.A.M. Cracked : i mean " output gain " is not original as " make up gain "

You set the make up gain by bypassing the unit and checking that over-all levels are same when bypassed and when compression is used. Compressors should be seen and not heard. When it's set right you should only hear a difference in the the way that the envelope is effected with little change in either gain or loss of the signal.

Yes it does: "Output" knob is make-up gain by a different name, and the "Auto" button above turns on automatic make-up gain.DreamTrance wrote:Thanks . I bought Fab Filter Pro C and it has no Make up Gain
Make-up gain = Output level. You could achieve the same thing just by turning up the channel fader, but you would lose the convenience of being able to bypass compression plus make-up gain with the same switch, which would make it more difficult to judge your settings.

You right , mate . After my experiences i understand it by my ears . As you say , Should be seen and not heard . I feel a little change when i started to use it on a true way .Bhan wrote:You set the make up gain by bypassing the unit and checking that over-all levels are same when bypassed and when compression is used. OTHER QUESTION :
Fab Filter Pro C doesnt have peak , lookahead , right? or may be i didnt see it wtih different name . On Ableton Live compressor has Lookahead and Peak . That's why i confused a little .

Thanks you too . I love thatkritikon wrote:I knew from the question that you'd get complicated answers in true KvR fashion.
The answer to your question is...yes.
Simple as that.
