Just an idea I had - Spectroblend powered by 1D Cellular Automata

I've been using mathematical progressions to create spectroblend tables, and then I was playing with 1D cellular automata in Mirek's Cellebration, and it dawned on me... What if... What IF... You hooked the two up together? Instead of a wavetable, you have the present state of all harmonics (either on or off, or a value if it's a non-binary ruleset), and the next frame of oscillator 'animation' is created depending upon the ruleset?

You could set each key-on to randomly seed the 'universe' and even do things like let velocity set the spawn density of the seeding, which would control harmonic density.

I know, there's not much scope for this in Zebra (yet), but this idea seems so interesting to me that I just had to share it! Would something like this be possible one day with scripting?

(Yeah, I know, I should get into C-sound or Reaktor or something...)

My experimenting with spectroblend had me thinking, amongst other ideas, about rule based tables, where the state of one spectroblend pane is dependent upon the state of an adjacent pane modified by the rule.

The barber pole osc preset you did (btw, nice idea) is one example - the rule there was something like, "copy the pane to the left, but move the pattern right by n harmonics".

However, implementing such esoteric functionality in Zebra would be complete overkill, not to say very difficult to do in a user friendly way. Perhaps someone might build a standalone oscillator designer - a deeper version of blueberry thing?

Yeah, hehehe...

We should get *something* esoteric going, eventually...

Cool!

More partials? 128 or even 256 perhaps?

How about 512 or possibly even 1024? Some of the additive synths go up that high. 512 allows all audible partials of 40Hz and 1024 allows all audible partials of 20Hz. While I can't imagine needing to go further some additive synths do include up to 1024 partials. Maybe number of partials could be an osc setting so you don't have to be bothered with the extras if you're not using them...
