Mask envelopes in Image Line Harmor

Hi forum,
does anybody know what the envelopes in Image Line Harmor do (for example the Filter Mask envelope)?
I didn't find any explanation in the (quite short) user manual.
By the way: I really like the Harmor videos by Charles Deluxe on youtube. Wish he'll do some more of that stuff.
Regards, Wilfried

Filter mask:
The filter is disabled in the freqency range you set. Unlike the costum filter, you can keep partials in certain frequencies then, independently from the filter freq.
But maybe i am missing here the real intention behind it
Yeah, they said there will be more harmor tutorial vids , but they didnt put anything new on their yt channel yet, seems like they focused on groove machine first. And yes, some imageline manuals realy need better explainations...

Yeah.
Does everyone remember the epic hype fest that was the many months leading up to Harmor?
Its one of the hardest to handle things I have, and there is basically no in depth documentation on it.
Im a bit shocked that that beast was unleashed and left to wander aimlessly.

Even more shocking if true...whet wrote:seems like they focused on groove machine first.

It is an amazing synth, the lack of after launch hype is almost certainly down to its quirkiness. Thorough documentation and tutorial videos would go some way towards more people (including myself) realizing its potential.

Totally agree ... on all points.projectdan wrote:It is an amazing synth, the lack of after launch hype is almost certainly down to its quirkiness. Thorough documentation and tutorial videos would go some way towards more people (including myself) realizing its potential.

Just consider that there are people who understand Harmor & can't do/record tutorials (like me), & others who can do great tutorials but don't understand Harmor, because they don't, or because they don't have the time to learn it in depth (as their job is.. to make videos). So I'm afraid that the videos you're waiting for will just teach you how to open a plugin or how to drop a sample in it.The filter is disabled in the freqency range you set. Unlike the costum filter, you can keep partials in certain frequencies then, independently from the filter freq.
I can tell you that a big lot of our official tutorials videos about my plugins are full of mistakes. But what can we do about it?
I make quick videos myself, but
-I don't have enough time
-I can't speak in them (english too bad)
Also, consider that there are things that I don't put in my plugins, just because I know I won't be able to explain them to anyone
Which is also why I tried to keep "traditional" oscillator & filter paradygms in Harmor, simply because people aren't ready for something totally new, a synth still needs to display a classic waveform & show classic filter controls. Maybe one day I'll do a fully modular additive synth, but THEN only 3 people on earth will understand it (that said, Reaktor & SynthMaker do have users..)
& yes, ideally it should have a fully detailed manual, but you could write a big book about it, while synths are niche products. So the other solution was not to make a too complex synth in the first place.. But I'm pretty sure it will take off, like Sytrus did (only a few years after its release - until then I was getting the same "we don't understand it" feedback about it).

Regardless of the 'current' lack of documentation, I am REALLY enjoying Harmor, and have no doubt that it will ultimately garner the same type of "fan base/following" that Sytrus has, on its own merits (naturally)...

For me harmor is the most straight forward additiv synth that i ve ever touched and it sounds great. The spectral display giving so much feedback, that i ve learned most functions, that the manual doesnt explain or i didnt understand, just by looking at it.
Another good start were the tutorial presets, of course you need a basic knowledge about synthesis to follow them.
While i understand most of harmors functions, there are 1 or 2 in the shaping section of the editor for example, that i couldnt figure out for myself yet, like "Image formant mutation". These should be explained by the Manual, instead of saying nothing about these parameters.
Sure, for some of those its pretty obvious what they re doing , like the mask parameters (i explained them not very well, ive simular problems as gol there). Perhaps some people dont understand them, because they are allready overwhelmd with the rest.
I understand that gol is skeptical about tutorial videos and maybe harmor is to complex to do many in depth videos. I still think, you could explain half of these, by the manual undiscussed functions, in a 20 min "How to do this bassline" video.
I personaly dont need these videos, i would prefer a better written manual.

Amen to that! Videos can be helpful but are no substitute for a comprehensive refence manual. When you're in the middle of an inspired tweaking session and need to remind yourself how to accomplish that little extra thing that will get your preset to the "magic" stage, you're not going to want to drop everything, go online and hunt through you-tube for that one video trick you saw somewhere once that explains just what you need.whet wrote:I personaly dont need these videos, i would prefer a better written manual.

Why not ask Dan Worral (IIRS here) to do some in-depth video tutorials. The man makes great tutorials and knows his synthesis inside and out. I'm sure he wouldn't have any problems understanding Harmor.
Cheers!

now THAT sounds like fun! (i once thought about doing something similar, a long long time ago when i actually had free time... i think now i'll just settle for trying to find more time to dig into harmor...)tony tony chopper wrote:Maybe one day I'll do a fully modular additive synth, but THEN only 3 people on earth will understand it...

He's my favorite tutorial guy, by far. His knowledge, "building-blocks" approach, manner, and in fact his whole "style" makes watching (and listening) a pleasure, and they're always straight forward and informative.

How odd!
So, the hangover from Harmor hype was so bad, that no one even cares anymore.
How many pages was the hype thread?
And now IL is basically all but telling everyone to piss off- for a manual?
I dont think a manual that actually covers all functions is too much to ask? Is it? I dont need the videos either. They are nice, especially for such an odd and new sounding thing, but damn, I do want to know how it works.
I mean, there are things that have no documentation at all Id bet, and apparently there are literally NO plans to create it?
I gotta admit, that kinda pisses me off.
Even moreso with the implication that the laughable (in comparison, imo) GrooveMachine is getting the attention...?
Hasnt IL pandered to the noobs on enough occasions? Do you not have enough of the amateur hour DJ/Producer market share yet?
Maybe, do a solid for the sound nerds that you hyped up for tens of pages?
Shit, do a solid for the amazing tool you built...?
You built this thing and literally no one knows how to use it.
Sound designers!
In twenty words or less- Why are there no Harmor banks?
I think there are fairly few people who have dug into Harmor and really understand it. The video bit makes no difference. Tutorials aside- How many presets for Harmor are there floating around since release?
Invest in your product...?
But, Im guessing that wasnt your point, so how can you not realize that that is backwards? You are dumbing down your expertise because of delivery to consumer..?
Pay someone.
I bet it would be amazing what would happen if you created full documentation and paid a top sound designer to tinker for two months, before hyping and selling.
Ideally?
Maybe I am dumb. But imo, something as complex as Harmor should definitely have a manual. A reverb, does not need twenty pages. A synth that does things that few other synths can do, prolly would benefit from some words.

Well yeah, you prolly shouldnt waste your time doing that. You should be paying someone who is very very very good to do it while you work on stuff you are awesome at.tony tony chopper wrote: I make quick videos myself, but
