What is a good video editing software?

I'm looking for some video editing software so that I can make some music videos, publish it on youtube and torture the youtube-watching masses in general. Preferably cheap, and PC-compatible.

Until recently I used Vegas Video -- an old version from back when it was a Sonic Foundry product. Now it's Sony but still very good. You can get a "home user"-type version quite cheaply, and it's not at all incapable. I still have "Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0," which provides up to 10 video and 10 audio tracks, enough for pretty serious work. It's up to version 11 now. If you look around and/or sign up for Sony's email newsletter and wait, you can probably get it very cheaply.

I second that. Vegas is second to none for quick, easy editing (and audio mixing too!). A real dream. We've been using it at my work for over a decade now.
Wish they made it for Mac.

I used to use Vegas Movie Studio. If you don't need super fancy features, it's way more than enough.

Check amazon for pricing on Vegas Home Studio. In the UK its less than half what it is in Sony's own online store, cheaper than the upgrade from the previous version, in fact

For free there's also Editshare Lightworks, which is actually a full-spec as-used-in-Hollywood editor, now in a beta pending being open-sourced. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightworks)

I've been a long time user of Serif software, for web design / dtp / photo editing, as well as movie making.
Their philosophy is strictly 'ease of use' with most things being on a WYSISYG basis.
Their MoviePlus software (as with most other of their stuff) has a free starter edition which is downloadable from : http://www.serif.com/free-video-editing-software/
If it works for you, and you register with them, you qualify for extremely reasonable rates on upgrades. (PC only)

Vegas, Magix MEP and Corel..I have had issues with older versinos of Magix MEP but I think it has the most features and I stopped at 14. Amazon has the latest version cheap I might get MEP for the 64 bit (if it is). Another plus for me is that I use samp and I can render a video to a unique codec for magix products and samp can not edit video but does have a video track
James thanx for the heads up on Serif

I vote for Vegas Movie Studio, too.
I have Vegas Pro 9 and I was surprised how capable Vegas Movie Studio was when a friend of my parents bought it and had me teach him.

There is also VideoStudio Pro X4 Ultimate (mouthful). I'm waiting for X5 to be released.. which I suspect will happen in the next few weeks.

well - for music video you dont really need an editor in the classical timeline sense/paradign
Vegas is great and comes handy anyways but
Resolume Avenue is even better
its very fast to learn and play with video and sound in it.
more like a playground than an editor ... it dumps to .avi everything you do so ... its damn cool.
but take a ride. demo is full functional excepting a watermark.

problem is its not cheap at all and you need a fast puter to have real fun.

Probably a bit off topic but there is also Blender [blender.org] if you are interested in learning or want to include rendered 3d computer graphics in your videos. Its open source and fairly powerful.
Check out the short movie Sintel at sintel.org and on youtube which was made using blender.

talk about a learning curve though, maybe far from free but iclone with the 3d exchange and free google sketch-up is much better than blender. Dont get me wrong, blender is powerful but with iclone you can dive right in...add the google sketch up and anything you want to create in 3d is possible (sketch up also does some animation)..but the hitch is to use sketch up models in iclone you need the exchange program too. There are 100s of thousands 3d models free for use and many with sketch up you can break down to groups so you further animate things like tires spinning, doors opening, wings flapping or anything you want. I use turbocad as well for some drawing, I haven't opened blender in ages...but I can import images in blender into iclone (as well as daz too)xtp wrote:Probably a bit off topic but there is also Blender [blender.org] if you are interested in learning or want to include rendered 3d computer graphics in your videos. Nero has video too, but I think Vegas Pro 11 is wonderful.
