Logic detects my controller - now what do I do with it?

I was pleased and surprised to find that Logic now natively supports OSC and seems very good at detecting my i devices when running host apps. As soon as it detects one it shows up in the controller panel - even with a nice image of the layout. So far so good. However what do I need to do then to get the device working with say Sculpture? A search of the helpfile for OSc draws a blank and although I found a few YouTubes showing this off they didn't say how to do it.

iPad or iPhone ?

I don't think you can control instruments with the iPhone version. At least I've never found a way anyway using the default LogicTouch template. Just channel, FX and EQ. My mate has an iPad and I checked out the template and that version offers much deeper control. It has a section for controlling instruments but he doesn't use Logic so I couldn't try it out.

TouchOSC

Using touch screen devices to control software. You can use default templates such as LogicTouch and Live Control or you can, as I have for Ableton, create your own template custom to your own needs.

The default templates are excellent but I only use Ableton for DJing so I custom made one for how I use it. If you already have an iPad it's a very well spent £4.

The iPad TouchOsc controller has an instrument panel. However ideally I would also like to add an XY to control Sculpture's morphing - and even more ideally would prefer to use Konkreet performer or Lemur but it only seems so far to detect TouchOsc and even then I can't seem to get it to do anything.

The only thing I can think of is to open the LogicTouch template in the TouchOSC Editor. From there you can add another page and put an X/Y controller on it. Set it as a MIDI Control instead of OSC and just manually assign it like you would any other MIDI control. You'll need the TouchOSC Bridge App for this.

And if you can't get TouchOSC to do anything try turning your firewall off if you haven't already.

I don't think I have a firewall on (its a Mac) but nothing is happening but I think that's because even though Logic is detecting my iPad it isn't clear what I should be setting it to in terms of ports etc

The OS X firewall setting is found in System Preferences -> Security on the FIrewall tab. It's should be on by default, and I would not recommend turning it off except to test whether it's blocking OSC from working with Logic.

Peace,
Andy.

It was off for some reason anyway

OK, well it should really be turned on. To do this click the padlock icon and enter your system password. The Secyrity preferences panel will now be active. Click Start to enable the firewall.

Click "Advanced ..." and you will see some more options (might be different because you're on Lion)

"Block all incoming connections" - unchecked

"Automatically allow signed software ..." - whatever you prefer, mine is off

"Enable stealth mode" - checked

There is also a list of apps that are allowed through the firewall.

Back to TouchOSC ...

If I use the included LogicTouch template (which is for controlling the currently selected channel strip) it works without requiring any other actions. The ports in TouchOSC are: 7000 (out) and 7513 (in). I think these are the defaults.

What I can't do is control Sculpture, but not sure why that is. Learn isn't working, maybe there is a specific OSC control name that's required ...

Peace,
Andy.

It's Sculpture I want to control more than anything - I tried using my V Synth D beams and touch pad to control it and it responded but the morph square kept going off to the side when I took my hand away instead of returning to the centre which is a bit of a pain.

Thankyou it did - I now have it sort of working. For some reason the link with the channelstrip volume slider is very sluggish but on the other hand the software instruments and channel EQ are detected instantly - I have even been able to control the XY in Sculpture (though it needs an XY in TouchOsc not 2 knobs for that - how can that be added?)

Just had a go with the editor on my Mac but it seems hard to change anything in that Logic template without messing the whole thing up - also I can't see how you get into multi page templates, the knobs of the X and Y params are on something like the 3rd page of the instrument controller but I can't see how to get at them
