I clearly don't understand how Reaktor works

I started making an 80s sounding track, and when I re-opened the track the Reaktor ensemble I was using had disappeared! So not only do I not know which preset I was using, I don't even know what ensemble it was from

It's the evolving arpeggiated sound in this clip :-

Well an arp will narrow it down. Local copies are your friend.

What do you mean? Is there another way I could find out what sound I was using in the project?

(I liked it to) I'm saying maybe if you're willing to do some work. I think what I'd do is go to the Reaktor User Library and put arp in the Search box. Thne I would re-jigger the list by Rating (because it's obviously a good ensemble), and see if you don't recognize it. Tell us what it is to BTW. I'm thinking it was Surviv-A or one of the Nord's.
That's probably the only thing to hate about Reaktor. Trying to remember where you found a particular sound/fx.

Obviously the first place to look is your own collection of ensembles. Perhaps think about how you selected it in the first place. Are they sorted or just a huge alphabetical list. Try to get back into the mindset of creating the project and how it progressed...and get lucky.

It shouldn't have disappeared, unless you've deleted or moved it. Try moving all of your ensembles into the default folder, and reopen the project again.

Sorry for the belated response.

It wasn't Spark, and I only have whatever ensembles came with Reaktor as I've barely touched it in the 2 years I've had it

The weird thing is that I saved the Cubase project with the ensemble open inside Reaktor, but when I open the project again Reaktor is there but it's empty. Clearly I need to save it, or the project in a special way with Reaktor?

You should save the ensemble, only if you've made changes to it. Otherwise, those would be lost. Check your Library folder, maybe you've deleted it by accident.

Thats weird.
I absolutely hate the way Reaktor saves/loads as a vst, but usually the worst that will happen is that it will save over the init snapshot of the original ens with whatever you were doing.
The 'auto save' feature in Reaktor is for me the most annoying thing NI has ever done. It just does not always work in FL. It keeps me from getting too friendly with Reaktor. I should prolly experiment with newer versions...

Assuming you have normally have your ensembles on your hard drive, are they all missing or do you have so many you don't know where to start ? You have tried to load other ens, I take it. What exactly happens ?

To sum up, your ensembles have to be somewhere ? If that is what you are actually struggling to find, search C: for .ens

I just hope it is this simple, cos we're all very concerned now. (I mean I've told the whole bobwood family. My brother has a very furrowed brow about it)
