Hey guys!
I always thought that the mic i have was pretty cool, because it always sounded good with the female voice I'm working with. However, last week I was in another studio and was able to compare this mic with another.

The result was pretty interesting: While my mic sounded good on smooth vocals and in mixes where the voice has a lot of space, the studio mic (i think it was a rhode) sounded harsh ...but brilliant if you record Rap.

This made me think. Are there actually mics that are preferred in certain genres, voice colors, singing styles...? I think most mic information sheets are way to unspecific with discribing the mic's characteristic.

It sounds a little bit similar to the days when guitarplayers were suggested to use a solid state transistor amp after playing in tube amps forever.

Sounded dreadful for a lot of reasons - pickups in guitar produce not so nice tone and tube amps camoflague a lot of the odd harmonics by producing even ones.

There are no rules that fit all genre, I think.

Some use a SM58 in studio since they like how they sound in this mike. They don't want hifi showing all weaknesses.

If running a harmonica you want massive distortion going with it.

So as you said - I think very much so it's genre thingy. :)
