Ok, so you damage a cable (signal, low voltage psu etc not talking mains power here), what's the best way to repair it?
I've been guilty of just soldering the stripped ends together then smothering the whole joint in insulating tape but obviously not pretty nor particularly strong. Did once break out the heat gun and use heat shrink which looked better but still not ideal.
I've seen a method where you loop the cable back on itself and cable-tie it tight to relieve pressure on the joint but very bulky and looked like it would stress the loops unless you left them stupidly long.
And there's the stripboard method; two tracks of vero board, solder cables to board then cable tie cable to board. Still bulky though.
So, come share you're methods, it'll be fun!

Expediency : solder and heatshrink. maybe sugru reinforcement if there's a need for it.
Sensible : replace the cable completely, and make 2 shorter ones out of the original
Note : sensible rarely happens, i hate soldering cables at the best of times.

Hadn't thought of that, so you just embed the joint in the sugru and smooth to taste?whyterabbyt wrote:Expediency : solder and heatshrink. maybe sugru reinforcement if there's a need for it.
With you there, just massacred a mates mic cable, totally messed up the xlrs trying to reassemble the housing...Note : sensible rarely happens, i hate soldering cables at the best of times.

Yup. Ive done this with earbud repairs near a couple of times, particularly near the plug/buds. The cables are so fine anyway...GaryG wrote:Hadn't thought of that, so you just embed the joint in the sugru and smooth to taste?whyterabbyt wrote:Expediency : solder and heatshrink. maybe sugru reinforcement if there's a need for it.
Yikes. I tend to buy Neutrik jacks in 'small bulk'. 25 or fifty at a time. XLRs I'll maybe buy ten of, just in case. With you there, just massacred a mates mic cable, totally messed up the xlrs trying to reassemble the housing...
