I have an iphone and lots of apps and looking at getting an ipad.. I'm assuming some of them will be usable on my ipad without having to re-purchase.. Anyone know which is which.?.
Its a bit hard to tell browsing the app store.
For example i know animoog has an ipad version but will i be able to load the iphone version and use it anyway? and things like nanostudio, thumbjam, amplitube? Or any of the other pricier ones..

I'd be interested in hearing some answers here as well, but I'm looking at the opposite - I have an iPad and I'm considering an iPhone.

If you check the App's page in AppShopper or iTunes, it should tell you whether or not the app is Universal, which means it will run on both iPad and iPhone (with the display usually optimized for the iPad when running on that device). Most music apps are Universal. If it says iPhone only, you can usually still run it on the iPad, just either really tiny in the middle of the screen, or blown up 2x to the iPad screen size (Figure is this way).

I had the same question before I bought my new iPad (3). All of my iPod Touch apps work very well on my iPad. The x2 feature on the iPad works very well. Some have mentioned that doubling the GUI on the iPad looks a little fuzzy. I haven't noticed that on the 70 or so music apps that I have.
I would like to know though if an app is described as universal does that mean it was programmed to auto detect which device it is running on and thus projects the appropriate GUI for maximum resolution?

I have many apps on both my iPhone and new iPad.
I even cloned the installation by migrating the apps via iCloud.
But yeah, more and more synths now are universal.

There are many approaches to building an Universal App, and I think XCode (the choice IDE for building iOS apps) has made things easier nowadays with each new version.
Basically you reuse code on both platforms and change things a bit where they differ, like different GUI controls you wanna use (some for instance default on the iPhone and custom made on the iPad), resources, etc.
It can be done with style or really bad code.
But in the end, generally speaking, it is as you mention, the app itself has to be built with an universal target in mind, otherwise it can be an iPhone-only or iPad-only (HD).
What better religion than music itself?

Same here with my iPod Touch. Though being small enough to fit in a pocket greatly outweighs the necessity to don my reading glassesshanecgriffo wrote:Thanks, it' made my iphone seem so tiny when i picked it up again haha
