Hey, i have a pair of adam a7x monitors and i love them for everything but their low end at the moment, part of this is because the room i am currently in, next week i will be moving from a non treated VERY small room (just eneough space for desk and chair) to a larger room

New larger room dimensions : 12.9ft x 9 ft x 8 ft (l x w x h)

Treatment : 2 x floor to ceiling bass traps, rocksil RS45, 4 x GIK 244 bass panels, 1 1200 x 1200 x 50 mm on mix cloud (also installing 2 more 50mm rocksill 'walls' (behind my wardrobe))

I have decided that i want a sub as part of my set up,

I could get the Sub 7 Pro or the Sub 8, obviosuly the normal choice is the larger one as my A7X's already are the same size of the Sub 7, however given the size of my room and treatment etc. would anybody advise the sub 7 over the sub 8 or vice versa?

Im unfortunately not in a position to check

Any input would be great!

Thanks

Mike

Hey Mike...sorry I don't have any advice for you...i'm looking to get the same question answered. Did you ever find anything out/try either of the subs with you a7x's?? Let me know!

I think that even treated that room is far too small to use a sub.

Remember it's not important to hear the bass loud, but to hear it accurately.

It's probably worth spending a few weeks getting used to the monitors in the new space before making any decisions, as you may find that mixes translate very well once you're used to the treated room more.

Hey,

Since posting this topic i went on to buy a Sub 8, but in the same time i have also sold it again, it wasn't really making a difference to my productions, i wasn't using it as i should (the 'satellite' way)

Basically your supposed to have your output from your soundcard/monitor controller in to the sub then out from the sub in to the adams with a high pass, the problems i found were that :

1. because the audio signal is running through your sub, the sub needs to be on all the time your monitors are on. if you don't want to hear the sub you need to just crank it down to -60db

2. The sub goes up to 125 hz, but the crossover frequency is 85hz and you can't adjust it, kind of pointless,

3. the high pass option is on the back of the sub, so if you want to flick between the 2, you need to get up and move it, and in my case it was under the desk, which was a pain

All in all it is a very poor design, its very powerful you will get a lot of low end from it

I ended up using it separate for a couple of weeks, i had it as a separate output and used it only for reference of what is going on down there, however i am used to mixing my low end in my headphones (V Moda Crossfade LP 2's) and i know how they should sound, so i ended up selling the sub and keeping the cash

I haven't heard the sub 7 but that has more options on it than the 8, bypass foot pedal and such, i definitely wouldn't blow a load of money on the 8, id personally try and find a 2nd hand 7, at least that way it will only cost you a couple of hundred, the same price of a pair of good cans, or just buy a pair of good cans (which in my case i already had) - as you can use them for when your travelling etc. as well

Hope that helps you out

Mike

how do the roll-offs look for the sub and for the speakers? maybe you will get too much energy at around 100 hz or something, but maybe you can use some eq or baffles. maybe if you have a pair of auratones or something similar, they could keep you out of trouble while your speakers are sounding so awesome and powerful.

good on you for having good monitors. imho, a sub is indispensable.

Thanks for all the info, really appreciate it!
