Trillian.
But it's expensive.
Also heard good things about Manybass.

Orange Tree Sample's Core Bass Cherry is pretty darn good, too, and includes many articulations and slap.
I wish I still had it.

Trilian isn't REALLY expensive once you consider the cost of buying just one Scarbee library. Start adding up what you get for what you pay and it is actually a very good value.

Until a realistic physical modeling bass VST (ie, something from Mokafix) comes along, Trilian, Scarbee, and OrangeTree Cherry are the only two that come to mind. I want double bass too, so Scarbee and OrangeTree Cherry won't give me that. But Trilian will. But to be honest I'd prefer an emulation of a double bass.

woah! How come no one has mentioned the Native Instruments Scarbee basses form Kontakt yet? I use the Scarbee Precision Bass and the Scarbee MM bass. I'm planning on getting the Scarbee Fender Jazz bass library too. In Nashville studios, the "GO TO" bass is a good Fender Pre bass. Most NY studios go with either the Pre bass or the Fender Jazz. Mind you, I don't really know what instruments the metal and hard rock guys go for.
