What can I do to process sound in terms of sounddesign? Filters?

Hi there!

As the topic says, I'm looking for new ways to process sounds when I got a sound I like, I usually run it through distortion, compression, EQing, reverb, delay, effectrix for those special effects sometimes, but what I do miss is a filter plugin that will be my "main-go-to filter plugin".

I own Soundtoys Filterfreak, which surely is a great filterplugin. Also I do have the Sugarbytes WOW filter plugin.

I like Filterfreak but it feels like it's hard to create some good filters within it, or it's rather slow getting it. What I wish for is pretty much a plugin where I can set it to BP, LP, HP, and all that without having to tweak it myself or go through a hundreds of presets.

What would you guys recommend to use as a main-go-to filterplugin and what are you currently using and why?

Also, do you have anything that will make my creativity of sounddesign be enhanced? anything appreciated!

Thanks alot.

I'm a little confused as to this. You have filterfreak, an amazing plugin, and you want to be able to set it to BP, LP, etc without having.. to do it yourself? Because there's a simple knob that does that right on filterfreak's gui. It has all the parameters that you need right there, without other stuff cluttering it up, and it sounds great. I'm confused.

Alright, never mind the filterquestion then, I just tend to seem filterfreak hard to work with, that's all. I was pretty unclear with what I stated.

In terms of processing the sound other than what I said above, what else could I do?

I've started to look abit into Zebrify, but I don't really get how to play with it, and what I could use it for. I just want to make my sounds more interesting with effects and stuff, other than things in the synths such as LFO's, modulation matrixes, mod envelopes etc.

you could try camel space, fabfilter saturn, or vengeance stereo tools to discover new possibilities in sound design.

love those three plugins!

Thanks alot for the tips!

I actually have Camel Space and Camel Phat which I use alot.

I wonder though. FXpansion Etch, is it an equally good filter plugin as Filterfreak? I don't really like how Filterfreak is layered, the GUI is so.. I don't know, professional for sure, but booring (just a taste). I like how FXpansion Etch has its GUI set up, and I'm a big FAN of Geist. Using it ALOT!

Would you recommend that instead?

Other than using Camelspace or Fabfilter Saturn to really mess up my sound patch, what else could I do?

Or I might reprhase, what is the first thing you guys do/test when you got a soundpatch set up that you're pretty happy with? I know this will differ on what kind of sound you want to achieve.

Let's say you are making a synth lead, what would you process it through?
And the same with bass, what would you do here?

That might give me some inspiration and new stuff to try.

Thanks alot for the answers so far!

So, not only do you want the plugin to make you read your mind you want someone to tell you how to make music as well!

no, don't get me wrong.. I just want some hints and tips on how to get more creative with this. I'm sorry if you got me wrong.

Rather than reaching out for more Plug-Ins maybe you should imagine first what you actually want to do and then start looking. I think sounddesigning is all about imagining something first and then sculpting that imagination...

For me, kind of. I think it helps to try stuff - otherwise you won't even know what can do what. Just doing this can also spark off new ideas.

For example, I'd have never known how to create anything in the weird MP3 burbling class of spectral effects before trying Dtblkfx, so just knowing what I wanted wouldn't have helped in this case. Further than that, using Dtblkfx has actually given me a lot more ideas for sound-design over time.

This is kind of what I'm talking about.. I'm just looking for tips to enhance my processing and make it sound more interesting. Things that I couldn't imagine myself.

If you're looking specifically for filters then Volcano from FabFilter and Filterscape from u-he are very good.

Sounds like you want not a static filter but one to modulate with env, lfo and sequencer. Sugar Bytes WOW has all that and is really easy to use. Besides that the filter sounds excellent and the vowel modes are superb.

So why don't you try to use WOW more often?
No band limits, aliasing is the noise of freedom!

Well I'm not sure what I want actually, I just want something that gives movement AND something static that changes the characteristics of the sound. I'm not really after the "wovel" effect, I got that with WOW filter. Really good plugin. But I will definately look into it more deeply, thanks for the suggestion!

Is there any plugin that will make my sounds sound more "rubber" alike? like someone bending rubber or so? would be cool.
