Hi new here, just posting a few links to some sound clips I uploaded to soundcloud that demonstrate (for me, maybe for you) what Electri6ity and Shreddage X can do in producing servicable guitar tracks. If you're not familiar with these libraries, they are virtual instruments that run on the Kontakt engine, and use insane amounts of memory and disk to produce sampled guitar parts in your DAW.

I'm a guitar player, and have long been interested in getting some virtual instruments to help out and fill in the gaps. Pretty much everything I tried last I looked a couple years ago was terrible. Clearly some big progress has been made.

Still not sure what I think about it, but if you are interested in virtual guitars, have a listen and see what you think.

None of the clips have any real guitars in them, or any real instruments at all.

I've had the tools for a couple weeks now, and am getting the hang of them a bit through these tests. If anyone is interested in specific setups used, etc., I can provide more info on request.

Post in the Impact Soundworks sub-board as well, or direct the founders in here. I'm sure they'll love to hear examples of their products in action other than "soundtrac remixes".

Personally I like (fromt the Shreddage X demos) the Ozzy one and the Van Halen (Unchained) one. The Killswitch Engage one needs a different amp and/or different EQ settings. But you pretty much nailed Ozzy's "Bark at the Moon" in terms of sound.

OK will do.

Yeah, no doubt there's a lot of improvements waiting to be made if I'm trying to "match the band's sound". The goal for this set of tests was (and is) something much humbler: can I get it to sound like a real guitar and a real amp, even if it's not a good match for the original player's rig?

I think the state of amp sims is such that trying to go for specific tones for the band (no idea what KSE guitarists use, but I like their sound) is a fool's errand. There's just a few amp sims that are adequate at this point. When I go fool around with other amp sims for a different sound, I always end up back with the same trusty few.

It'll come.

I think most of these samplepacks still have some major deficits - and IMO that is the volume and tone dial.

In case for Electri6ity, it's "uber" warm, loud as heck and instant gratification. It has ton of lowend, which makes it simpler to apply a guitar amp "post" the samplesets. But I miss the interaction of the tone while turning down the volume.

In direct contast, RealStrat/RealLPC by Musiclab is "uber clean" due to the fact that they recorded straight from the PU's and not the electronic or DI's, so you have to model in some lowend, give it some gain boost and apply power volume/tone control. But then it's a killer application (speaking of the v2 engines here, v3 is not yet available).

I think this is what makes you think that certain samplesets (if not all) are not made for this job. Playabiligy being another thing. I can agree that these sets came a long way from straight legato and maybe 2 keyswitches and 1-2 layers of samplevolume in AKAI/GIGA Format. But no guitar sampleset is perfect.

That does not mean that it's not usable and you should (especially a guitarist) rather go back to actual playing, but sketching ideas is so much simpler nowadays. And properly mixed (and played), you don't notice anymore what's real and what are samples in the end.

All I can say is:
take the learning courve, no shortcuts (as guitarist, you have a certain headstart) and keep it coming. There is no right or wrong, just what "you" make out of your available tools.

*footnote: by that I mean really - I know someone that pulls of just as realistic orchestra arrangement with the long discontinued EDIROL Orchestra compared to modern samples by VSL or EastWest - it's all in the editing*
