Thumbjam, Geo synth, MidiBridge, Genome MIDI -- but my absolute musts are informed by two facts: I write microtonal music and I still like my PC.

(Still trying to decide between TouchOSC, MidiStudio, MidiDesigner, etc..)

If I'd just keep one, it'd be ThumbJam.

Liine Lemur - incredible to have this on iOS.

Animoog - Sounds amazing, fantastic control, nothing quite like it outside of iOS.

Thank you gentlemen, keep 'em coming in. Any more?

iMaschine and Sunrizer, really fun to sketch some idea on the go. Nice when you need to go the bathroom. :P

touchosc is fantastic, but i wish the editor had a bit more control, eg some 'logic' AND, OR etc things to send values based on other controls.

or the ability to change other controls dynamically (like a slider that would change the midi channel of a huge multipush array, rather than having tyo have several.

or even the ability to show/hide controls. its crying out for more flexibility :)

Another little gem for me is the Stochastik Drum Machine;

NanoStudio is my "Grand Central Station" where all audio is either recorded or assembled from recordings in other apps. The flexibility and options this app has, both in terms of programming the Eden synth as well as recording and arranging, are fantastic. If it ever supported multi-samples and time-stretching, it'd be perfect.

My current favorite synths are Sunrizer (sounds that can either have great bite or great ambient/lush feel) and Alchemy Mobile (great pro sounds that give a pro polish to any track I use them in). ThumbJam is great for getting "real instrument" parts and sounds into NanoStudio.

I'm really surprised people haven't mentioned Garageband. I agree with all of the other apps people have posted, but the whole "Smart Instruments" thing is SO useful. I am really impressed at how easy to use they've made these instruments! I can create a guitar loop, send it to AmpKit+ for additional effects processing, and then send it to a DAW (MultiTrack DAW, Studio.HD, meteor, Auria, etc.) I know, I know... No self-respecting musician would ever admit to using "Garageband" as a main tool. The thing is, the iOS version is very different from the PC or Mac version, and the "Smart Instruments" is the shining feature that makes Garageband so useful. Thumbjam also works for this, but I think Garageband's instruments are better (Actually, it would be more accurate to say that they compliment each other).

I don't have it yet, but I really think Meteor would be my home base. I would create verse or chorus segments or loops in other apps (like Garageband or NanoStudio), and then do my mixing and automation in Meteor.

I'd REALLY like to see ACP or Audiobus added to the BS-16i. That is the one app that I have that I would REALLY like to integrate into my iPad mobile studio. Right now, AFAIK, it is basically for performance only. (if anyone knows a way to actually sequence and record the audio result of the BS-16i, please let me know).

Overall, I'd have to say that there are quite a few iOS apps that I like (listed in no particular order):

* NanoStudio
* Garageband
* Multitrack DAW
* Studio.HD
* Meteor
* Thumbjam
* Genome Midi Sequencer
* BS-16i
* Alchemy Mobile
* iElectribe
* DM1
* AmpKit+
* Beatmaker 2
* NLog Synth Pro
* Animoog
* Etc...
* Etc...
* Etc...... and so on

It may be down to what type of musical style/genre people are working in. As a more of a guitar based person, I find Garageband my #1 goto app. It's not just that the smart instruments are so easy to use--they also sound GREAT.

I also own Meteor, but I find myself bouncing from my ipad to my desktop for mixing, rather than Meteor. I just have way more tools at hand, that way.

edit: I also haven't heard the Korg ims-20 mentioned yet. I much prefer it to the Animoog, for my purposes. I find the programming much more straight-forward, and the drum machine/sequencer is much superior to the Animoog's record function.

Oh, and the sound is gritty and fat.

I have most apps worth having and that is a lot IMO (70+). Though I really like most of the standalone synths (nlog pro, Sunrizer, Argon, Animoog, Alchemy, Addictive etc.), I must say that my favorite apps are those where I can make as much as possible without the use of convoluted copy-and-paste procedures. That would be

1.NanoStudio
2.Beatmaker II
3.TableTop
4.iSequence
5.Rhythm
6.Rebirth
7.iMS-20
8.Garageband

I am not impressed by Meteor's on board virtual instruments. Neither do I appreciate the limited rompler approach of Music Studio, nor the FL mobile studio, so they are not used for the time being. Have just bought SampleTank and it sounds great but is not suitable for building whole tracks. For loops to export into other mini DAWs it is fine though.

Besides from the above I loooove vocoders and voice manipulators and have all worth mentioning:

9. iVoxel
10. Voice Synth
11. Voix
12. VOX 3000
13. Cylon Voice
14. Voice Jam
15. Voca Live

Cheers

For me currently it has to be Genome Midi sequencer.

Simple but deep. Sends midi clock etc so can work 'standalone' on the iPad (running synths like Animoog etc) or syncs as part of a bigger studio.

I'm also loving the tenori-on app too but no background audio and midi stuff limits it from the essential section.
No, that Glitch is meant to be there.....
