TouchDAW and Android

Anyone else using this? I found it last week and have started using it to control FL Studio with. It is also set up to use most of the other big name DAWS, Reaper, Sonar , Rason, Studio One ,Samplitude, SAWStudio,Acid/Vegas, and digital performer and protools. Works across wifi or USB.

this was one of the reasons I wanted a tablet in the first place. so far the latency is pretty low. Touch has a mixer, keyboard, and XY pad controlers.

Check out it there is a free version that will let you see if it will work for you. You do have to go to the website to get the setup instructions for the wifi midi set up.

I use it with StudioOne Pro v2, on a 'fire sale' Touchpad running the ICS Cyanogen mod...and it works great over Bluetooth. For some reason, it's hit-n-miss over wireless though.

So far I haven;t had any problem with wireless but I did have some quirks getting it to work across the usb cable.

For met it works perfectly with Ableton Live. Though I don't use it as a primary controller in any way (I have Zero SL MkII for that). I tend to use it while I walk round my room.

I use it with Reaper as a DAW controller, overall when I am seated on the eDrum Kit and also the XY pads with my Slim Phatty during performances.

I think it's a must have app for any Android user musician.

I have to revive this one from 2012.

I recently installed TouchDAW on a 10" single core tablet, and it's running fairly smooth (so far), but didn't set up any WLAN and host connectivity yet.

I'm actually not after the remote control of the host, which is fine to control the host from the recording room (definitely no doubt about that), but after the X/Y pad and the 4x4 drum pad.

I'd love to control FX with X/Y pads with this, and a drum VSTi with the 4x4 pads. Does anybody have experience on that end? Especially with the latter? Sure won't be an MPC or KAOS pad, but hey... I can at least go into that direction without spending more quids on extra hardware.

Well, I can answer this question myself now.

I just installed the "beta" MNET drivers (didn't like the concept of the rtpMIDI drivers, mnet looked simpler) and fooled around a bit in Cubase 7.5 (with TouchDAW in Cubase 7 mode, and Cubase 7.5's Mackie Control in Compatibility mode). Things run really smooth - and that on a cheap single core(!) tablet.

I also tested the X/Y and trigger pad's. Very responsive.


Though I really dislike one feature (might be due to the free version, have to check if that will be in the full version as well). If you accidentally slide off the pads, you activate the "lock mode" of the pads which triggers the samples from start to finish. Well, this is usually a setting within the drum sampler of your choice to emulate an MPC with "one shot" triggering or request that the button is kept pressed - and you can also turn that off in TouchDAW. The thing is, if you accidentally activate that mode (even if turned off, the "slide" motion still works), then "multitouch" isn't possible anymore, unless you switch the GUI to another view and then back (then it's reset). Again, I don't know if this is also happening in the full version. But if yes, then it's my first FR I'll file for an Android app.



Is it worth the price of roughly 6USD/4,75EUR?

Heck yeah - can't get any cheaper MPC trigger pad and X/Y touch controller for that amount (especially if you already HAVE an Android device). For everything else, I do have two Behringer Controls (Rotary in Generic Remote mode, Fader in Mackie babyHUI mode).

It won't be V-Control Pro, with even more features for hosts like naming of channels, changing color per channel strip and the likes. But for barely 5EUR (plus the money you invested in your Android device), you get a full fledged Mackie Control, a 88 key multi-touch keyboard (with Poliphonic Aftertouch and a Breath Controller!), a X/Y touch pad (you can even set the app to have two of them!), you can have a trigger pad up to 8x8 fields, you can even turn that into HEX mode and have a "Turmoil" touch panel.

That app is more than a steal!

Now I only need one of those Google AppStore Gift Cards (sadly, the smallest one in Germany is 15EUR) as I don't want to link my PayPal Account with the data kraken.




Info/hints on the developer's own MNET drivers (BETA):
If you're on Windows Vista or Win7, and you refused to install IE9 (like I did, even with the Service Pack installation), you can still set up the drivers if you have an Android device. The APK can be downloaded through the dev's page.

But in order to use the MIDIhub (as it is called), you need to launch a host first(!) which also launches the drivers, then load the MIDIhub app for setup, or checking connections. Else the app is telling you "can't connect". Though single core tablets might be a bit slow on drawing graphics (dragging MIDI cables).

If the connections are fine and properly setup, the order of launching your tools is like this:
TouchDAW (it waits for a connection) -> host on your computer (in my case Cubase)

If you start the host first, chances are you're greeted with an error message in TouchDAW. This was not pointed out in the manual as possible trouble shooting solution. Actually reminds me a bit of old ReWire days (order of loading and unloading). But I should know better by now - I also start my BCR/BCF prior to Cubase.
