the book and cd "songs in the key of z-the strange world of outsider music" are both worth picking up
highly recommended!!! been long time faves here for a few years.
was searching for a track from it for another thread and came across this
hope lifes good for you dude! i was chatting to mr spiers a few weeks back about you, met up with him in sheffield

great book. for something similar-ish you could do worse than the two "Incredibly Strange Music" books.
For slightly more meanstream (but not much), there's also
"Urban Spacemen and Wayfaring Strangers" and "Unknown Legends of Rock and Roll"
