Hello I'm new here and was after some advice. I'm a sax player (tenor) and am mostly playing strolling style just drums and bass as backing. I would like some recommendations for software that is easy to use so I can make some simple backing tracks. I have looked at some youtube videos of cubase and other sequencers but I want something that is much simpler! I was thinking of going for an ipad and garage band but what do you think?

Easy, get a daw, a cheap one, maybe ableton live lite or reaper. For the instruments part get ezdrummer and sampletank. Now you can arrange a simple backing track with them.

If you're new, get Studio One Free. It's free, like the name implies, so there's no upfront investment. And if you find yourself getting good results, you can upgrade.
