Steinberg is elated to release Retrologue and Padshop Pro, two synths that open the door to new levels of sound design. Both synths feature full VST and AU support and are ready to be used within your favorite DAW.
Introduced in the latest versions of Cubase and Cubase Artist, Retrologue has proven itself an exceptional virtual analog synth that spices up your production with first-class analog purity. Highlights of Retrologue include two cutting multi-oscillators, an earth-shattering sub- and noise-oscillator, twelve quality filter types and a high-class FX section.
Padshop Pro is the next step in the evolution of Steinberg's acclaimed granular synthesizer Padshop and offers exciting new features for experimental sound design. The pro version comes with a drag and drop sample import function, a 3-band parametric EQ, a high-quality algorithmic reverb and 50 new presets.
Plus, the new Zero Gravity expansion pack for Padshop and Padshop Pro gives you 250 additional presets and an additional SoftGrain Wave ROM with 150 new samples. With sound sources ranging from synthetic and drones to natural FX and voices, there are more than enough samples to get even deeper into the world of grains. The Padshop Pro full version and the Padshop Pro upgrade bundle already include this valuable extension, whereas the Padshop Pro basic upgrade delivers the core functions of the pro version at a more affordable price.
Padshop Pro, Zero Gravity and Retrologue are now available for download from the Steinberg online shop.

I upgraded to 6.5 the other week (seemed cheaper to than I remembered the last time I checked).
Anyway, I generally ignored the new synths.
The other day I loaded up Retrologue for the first time and was astonished at how nice this synth is! It's also very ergonomic, without looking at the manual I instantly worked out how it was all set out.
In fact, I had great fun just shaping pink noise with a key-tracked LP18 filter and some tube distortion, a little chorus and a touch of delay, no oscillators, and it sounded great. A bit NIN-y in a way.
I haven't looked into Padshop Pro that much. I already have wusikstation and with the wave sequencer, I notice a lot of parallels? i.e., I'm not sure that what Padshop does I can't already do in Wusikstation.

I am listening to the audio demos as I write this.. it really sounds great. At $49 it is not bad at all.

I love both Padshop and Retrologue. I wasn't really interested in an analogue synth, but after playing with the presets in Retrologue and adjusting them a little, I'm really liking it.
The upgrade from Cubase 6 to 6.5 was the best $50 I've spent in a very long time.

They kept the ones from Cubase SX3 and Cubase 4.MaF wrote:IMHO Steinberg left too many plug in corpses over the years which is why I never use any internal instrument from Cubase, let alone buy a plug in by Steinberg.

To be fair, they seem to have moved more in-house in recent times - so they're not in the same situation where they're as reliant on 3rd parties (Wizoo etc) for content, updates, and licensing agreements. Plus they did update stuff like Model E, and made it free, which is a nice gesture of good intent (even if it doesn't change the mess they made with some of their other stuff.)MaF wrote:IMHO Steinberg left too many plug in corpses over the years which is why I never use any internal instrument from Cubase, let alone buy a plug in by Steinberg.
Not that I don't think a bit of caution is wise, given the track record. But it does seem like it might be a bit less of a concern lately. Plus I think some of the future sound stuff (Virtual Guitarist/Pianos etc) will be pulled into the HALion sound library range, meaning they only have the one product to update instead of multiple things.

It says USD 49.99 on their website and it's a downloadable product.USD 60 for Retrologue, pretty nice price. Is that just the intro offer, or will it stay that way?

Padshop should have had au/vst and sample import from the start so it bites a little to have to pay for this "upgrade" but at least it's priced reasonably.

Just installed - not seeing a VST version, just AU. It definitely says on the site "Both synths feature full VST and AU support and are ready to be used within your favorite DAW" so why am I not seeing a VST version? (it wasn't an option in the installer either)
Also it's rather annoying where they have placed the browser so it covers a substantial part of the gui when it is open and you can't even more it!

Indeed, I agree it's a cheap little twist trick to suck a bit more money. A granular synth without sample import never made sense to me, which is why I did not buy it.aMUSEd wrote:Padshop should have had au/vst and sample import from the start so it bites a little to have to pay for this "upgrade" but at least it's priced reasonably.

Here's a few audio demo's for some of my presets included with the Zero Gravity expansion. Zero Gravity is part of the Padshop Pro Upgrade Bundle and contains 250 new presets and 150 new samples. Himalaya, Ed Ten Eyck, Peter Krischker and myself are some of the sound designers who created the expansion.
I must say, I really enjoyed working with Padshop Pro and I don't know how many hours I have spent just experimenting with importing different audio material into Padshop Pro tweaking them to otherworldly, crazy, cool and stunning new creations. It's a quite addictive synth so be warned!
The first audio demo are pads alone, the second is a mix of soundscapes and sound effects. Enjoy:
Zero Gravity - Luftrum PADS
Zero Gravity - Luftrum SFX
Here's a link to the expansion: http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/so ... avity.html
