Hi !

Here is a thread I started on the AmpliTube forum. But as lot of you are not registered on it, I thought I'd share it with you all here.

The following list features my most wanted bass amps for AmpliTube. Maybe not your taste, but I'm sure we could agree that they would make every bass player happy.

At least, I hope so.

Of course, they should come with the appropriate cabs. Would make better combos.

Maybe IK would take note, for custom shop addition, or for a future premium AmpliTube 4 package ? Purely speculating here.

So here we go, all 18 of them, sorted by alphabetical order :

Well, what do you guys think ?

Did I missed something ?

What did Jack Bruce use? A Marshall Major?

And Phil Lesh's rig. I think he used Alembic preamps and SS power amps.

James Jamerson would be hard to pull off since they went direct through some custom box at Motown.

How about Entwhistle? Did he use Hiwatts?

The GK might happen someday and I guess maybe the Orange could, but those others I'd say never. However, those might be tasty.

Is it ok to mention anything other than this company (stop it gold, I'm warning you! )

The eden/swr ones in particular are appealing. I'm a very modern bass sound liking guy. I can make a modern head sound "vintage" much easier than making a "vintage" sound modern. I guess though that is why variety would be nice :hyper:

Now, THIS is a thread where they can talk all they want.

It's interesting, a while back I got into it on another forum which will go unnamed [cough]Mixerman's[/cough] with a guy who has been performing and producing in the major label industry since the mid 70's (he's Cyndi Lauper's bass player now) and he and a Swedish engineer were all perplexed at me thinking there was such a thing as a "bass amp".

I didn't quite follow what the issue was, but they seemed to be implying that "bass amp" was just marketing. The Lauper bassist always used a Hiwatt guitar head plugged into his bass cabs, which he thought was the ultimate bass amp apparently.

Well, if he's happy with that setup, that's okay.

That does not mean that we should agree with him of course.

If that really was marketing, all the bass amps would sound almost the same.

Or maybe that's because after all these years playing too loud near his cab, he doesn't make the difference anymore :D.

Both of them didn't seem to think the very different preamps on bass amps were that important (thought they weren't stupid, they knew what they were there for).

But, yea, to each his or her own. I know a lot of bassists used guitar amps into bass cabs, say in the 50's and 60's before the really dedicated bass amp became so common.

that's interesting. I recorded with a producer once who plugged our bassist into my twin, plugged that into and SVT cabinet and then cranked the twin up. he also had her play through a Hiwatt guitar half stack. both sounds were great for the fuzzy indie pop we were doing at the time.

didn't Lemmy used to play through a Marshall guitar head? don't know what speakers he used though.

I think Ashdown is partnered with one of the iphone only specific ampsims now. Although it would be nice. It's my friend's bass amp of choice with Ashdown cab. I quite like it a lot too, even though I haven't played on much real top end bass gear aside from that and some practice type bass amps. He always gets ragged on for not having an SVT for playing rock ("Hey brah, that's not rawk n roll bro..."). It quickly turns into a non issue once he starts playing and the talent takes precedent over any amp he is playing on.

+1 on the David Eden and the Phil Lesh Alembic.

My cheap Squire bass even sounded decent and thumpy through my Soldano head/ 2x12 cab with the right EQ settings. Not ideal, but it would work If I needed to play live bass.

Where is the link to the thread on the IK forums? I haven't seen this thread...

FWIW - Carol Kay played through a Fender Super Reverb on most of her sessions in the mid-sixties before switching to a Versatone amp.

Now there's an obsure amp that would be cool to have modeled in a VST!
