Hmm, might have been a good idea if they added a few templates for some of the popular iOS synths.. It's like a puzzle I can't fathom at the moment!
-Maybe it should be in the game category haha

I don't fully understand all the midi interaction (this thing is deep), but have made some great interfaces for playing apps like Thumbjam, Sampletank, etc. If you're interested in making beats or midi controllers, I think this program is a no-brainer when you consider it's the price of a candy bar.

Let me add my voice to the chorus of people who find this app a little baffling. It needs better documentation, more templates and more usage examples. There were some examples for Live but I'm not much of a Live user, so.

How does it work? I mean does it have its own sounds or did I just blow my money? I was thinking it was like a drum machine and not a MIDI controller. I have no idea how to use this thing.

It's a MIDI controller only. You can use it to control drum machines via MIDI if you want. If it's any consolation, at least you only blew $1 instead of 12!

totally..its cool. I will figure out a way to use it somehow.
I have a nice little studio rack in my ipad..between GarageBand, Figure,Korg Electribe,Nanostudio, Magellan and Multitrack DAW I am hoping I can work them all together soon with the audio apps coming out.

I just bought it at a ridiculous low sale price hoping to create some custom templates for iPad use. I have several MIDI controller apps for my DAW (none of which are Ableton Live, which the developers so generously supply templates for) but none that are compatible with virtual MIDI on iOS.
In the first few minutes I was able to get a quick template for drums in Beatmaker-2 but only as a test to see if it worked as advertised. I was unable to (quickly) get GarageBand working but that may be just my unfamiliarity with GB.
Life got in the way so I haven't tried it with the many other music apps I have. Perhaps it would be a mutual interest if we, as users, would upload templates to the apps we all use. This may be covered in their forums already but alas, I haven't had time to look.
Irregardless, I think paying a buck for a 12 buck app was worth it. Looking forward to see how this app pans out.

Here's the MusicRadar review, which just got posted. It might explain it a bit better: http://beta.musicradar.com/gear/all/com ... 418/review

I've been using it mostly for playing other apps on the iPad. Have found it works really well with Thumbjam. As you can load two instruments in Thumbjam, and have one receive on channel 1, the other on channel 2, you can build something in Beatmaker that will let you play both simultaneously.
The midi interaction in this is deep, but I agree that the documentation is pretty lacking... I'm fairly lost when it comes to anything beyond just sending notes and adjusting modulation. Would really like to see someone do an in-depth tutorial where they show setting up a template from scratch.
In the mean time, I'm still enjoying it.

Here are the apps I have tested that work with Beatsurfing:
WaveSynth Pro
BeatMaker 2
Alchemy
SoundPrism Pro
Thumbjam
Arctic Keys
Addictive Synth
Sunrizer
NLog Pro
bs-16i
Many other apps do not work due to the lack of background audio and/or virtual MIDI.
Perhaps one day all music apps will implement BGA and VM.

Just an update on the apps I have found that BeatSurfing supports:
Magellan
DrumJam
I must have misconfigured them in my initial test. I'm still trying to work out a way to trigger loops in DrumJam and the transport bar but am unsuccessful so far. Same for my other apps. More testing is needed as I find time.
Any tips that others have found would be appreciated.
I'm really liking this app so far. It could use more colors/shapes and more customization in general but a fine app nonetheless.
