I've tried Proteus VX and liked it. Not my favorite but still nice.
As i needed a USB to MIDI cable , i went to the music store.
I Ended up buying a box with :
-Proteus X2
-Emulator X2
-4 cd's of soundbanks
-and a double Midi to usb interface(e-mu xmidi 2x2 )
All for the same price as the usb to midi cable ....
Still not shure it was a good deal ...
since proteus X2 "HAS TO BE CONNECTED TO THE" e-mu xmidi 2x2
or it will not work.
So :
- What are the difference between Proteus VX and Proteus X2
- Are the soundbank compatibles both ways ?
(From Proteus VX to Proteus X2 and the other way around )

Proteus X Composer.exb, Saint Thomas Strings.exb, and a decent Grand Piano,
are all fine tools. There is a great vibraphone, in the Hip-Hop set as I recall.

I got it from archambault.ca ( but not listed on their web site )
So far, i made a good deal,
1-so far, the soundbanks seems compatible both way ( X2 <--> VX ).
2- the xmidi 2x2 works fine on my old computer (usb1)
3-the xmidi 2x2 is perfect because with my old multitimbral synths, i need more than the 16 channels limitation ( got 2 x 16 channels )
4- I found out that the Emulator X can convert Soundfont,Gigastudio,Halion S5000 & s6000 to its own format. (pretty cool, but didnt tryied it yet )
--> Only down side is proteus x and emulator x wont work on the other PC... because it needs to detect the hardware to work.

Seems wont work on same DAWN ( unless i did something wrong ) ( using Reaper )
not a proplem since ill create and modify sounds with proteus x2 on the pc with the xmidi hardware
and dump the patches on the other pc with free proteus vx.
Pretty cool ...
P.S. i doubt you can buy online since its not on their site anymore
... only 2 or 3 in store left for around $ 39.00(can$).
Didnt make such a good deal but defenitly not a scam ... sheer !!

I have those Sample CD's that came with my old Proteus X and Emu 0404 soundcard, but they do not work in Windows 7. I have tried loading the CD's and the .exb files into the VX version with no luck. 
I guess it is a reason to keep my old windows xp machine around.
You have any luck with loading the CD's or .exb's? I even tried to convert them to Kontakt libraries, no luck.

I'm still trying to figure all things out for now.
About the 4 cd's:

Studio Grand IS NOT compatible with VX
( no streaming in vx -for large files-)
But all installed on the same PC.
My next step : install every thing on other PC

Well the screwy thing is in my case... Windows 7 64 bit has no drivers for the Emu 0404 or the Proteus X, so its kinda junk.
I tried loading them into VX once, but to no avail. I think it only makes sense to keep an old Windows XP machine laying around.

I've never used Proteus X1 idk if there is anything different about it. I just installed Proteus XV and then loaded the sound banks that I have for it and they came up in XV.

Can you please let me know which sound banks you are using with the Proteus VX? I keep getting some "One or more sample link files could not be found" error. Then nothing plays.
