I would like to take the sound of a sample and edit it so that it sounds as if a mellotron played it.

Note: I am not looking for information on where I can find mellotron samples. I am looking to apply the mellotron effect to other instrument sounds.

Any ideas?

Multisamples with a short release and a thin (hipassed) frequency range mostly.

Run the sample through a long tape echo effect, that is longer than the sample itself, with the feedback turned up close to runaway feedback. Let the echo loop through several repeats, until the sample has the desired wow, flutter, and noise. Record the output of the tape echo effect, and trim the sample to the desired length.

If you want to get really obsessive, get an old tape deck (the cheaper the better), bounce your samples to the tape, bounce back to digital, and repeat this process until things sound properly aged. This is a Boards of Canada trick.

That's a cool trick. I had a "high tech" Dolby cassette tape player - with noise-reduction, cant remember which type of NR. If you did the above trick with it, your transient's will eventually become peanut-butter :hihi:
Haven't though about that cassette player in years, think I should try and track one down again.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I was wondering, however, if there is a VST out there that possibly with some tweaking can do this.

Fabfilter Timeless has a few nice presets that'll do the trick.

That's what you hear on this violin: http://mountainmirrors.bandcamp.com/track/your-angels
