Hi there, i'm using an iPad1 with these apps right now:
Samplr, Lemur, TouchAble, Orphion, Beatmaker 2.0, Reactable, Chippad, Loopy HD
I was pretty happy with my iPad1 until i discovered some apps which changed completely my point if view. Audiobus is just one to mention.
Until a couple of days ago i saw my iPad1 just as an nice controller for Ableton going nicely along with touchAble and Lemur. But now i see what potential the iPads have. So i would like to upgrade to an newer iPad, preferable a second hand one. It should be said that i own a macbook pro i7 which i'm happy with. So my aim is not to make entire albums on the iPad, but would like an ipad to quick realize an idea.. As far as i can see it, the newest iPad is more made for gaming and graphic apps in general, which i don't really need. I won't play any game on it.
Robustness is one imortant criteria. I'm very tempted to a second hand iPad2. But i heard the Display will crack pretty easily, heard that the iPad3 had/has some heat issue. Any experience here?
A lot of people would say, "go for the iPad4". Using Apple since the last 10 years, it caused my the least headaches beeing one release behind in terms of hardware and software. The Software is seems to be more ironed out and the hardware seems to be more optimized (example iPad3 -iPad4)
Last Thought. Sure, having a iPad4 would give me the most headroom for further applications. But every headroom can be exhausted when using a certain amount of apps and FX running at the same time. Like every Computer. And the mainsquestion for me is. Do i need the expensive paid power of an iPad4 straight away? How knows how many iPads will be release until i would reach the iPad4 limitations. As mentioned already, i'm planing to make entire albums on it.
So, hej ! iPad2 and iPad3 users, would the iPad2/iPad3 be overtaxed using the apps mentioned above in combination with audiobus and a filter/fx in between two apps? Do you feel the the really NEED already to go for an Ipad4 because you are hitting your limitations using the iPad in a similar way i would use it?
So i'm really attempted to jump on an iPad2/iPad3..
Suggestions and thoughts very welcome.
Thanks

Not really much help, but I just moved from an iPad 1 to an iPad 4 and the difference in 'slickness' is very noticeable. The iPad 1 would 'stutter' when changing between apps, and have a slight pause when doing many tasks - the iPad 4 has none of that.
To be honest, if you're going to upgrade I'd look at it like a PC - get the most powerful you can afford at the time, as tech is always improving, and I strongly suspect that the iPad 4 will become too 'slow' much quicker than the iPad 1 has, and it's already twice as fast as the iPad 3.
Of course, there the matter of cost but if you're even thinking about upgrading an iPad then money isn't really an issue, being the luxury toy that it is
All being said, very happy with my iPad 4. With all of the software improvements over the last couple of years, it's very usable now.
(Before the other crowd chime in, I did consider going for an Android tablet, but the apps aren't even close. Sorry)
Edit: And you just reminded me to buy Samplr

The iPad 3 heat issue is nonsense. They get warm yes, but never had a problem with it related to heat. Did have a problem with dropping it and denting the metal casing, but the screen survived intact! No scratch and it fell 6 foot.
Whichever one you upgrade to, prepare for it to be "outdated" inside 6 months, maybe less as things are at the moment.
App wise the iPad 3 runs everything nice and smooth with audiobus and multiple apps all going at the same time. The only real question you have, if I was in your position, is old connector vs new connector? I would go for the ipad4 though, all considered. Price difference doesn't make going for an older model worthwhile.
