Favorite new synth, but lacking a lot of options or presets - Novation Launchkey. This thing has wicked sound and really fun to play.

Samplr is my favorite new sound mangler. Favorite old one is Filtatron.

Just had a fun afternoon playing those hooked into my focusrite and my netbook, but just live playing along side some beats I did in Ableton with Poise and some good samples.

Soon with Beatmaker 2 and Audiobus plus more apps jumping on board for Audiobus, I'll have these fun jam sessions just with the ipad running straight into the powered speakers and maybe one controller hooked up.

Mobile apps as sound modules are really cool as it is though.

While I don't use the iPad to sequence music, I must agree with you that it is an excellent sound module. As far as "new stuff, I agree about LaunchKey.... flat out fun to play with, and you can come up with some pretty interesting ideas with it. Megellan is also pretty good, as far a the new synths go.

Honest question, do you use them for anything other than just "playing around" or is there a practical way to get them integrated into Logic, or other DAW?

Looking more into these apps, particularly the synths, I'm constantly thinking how great it would be if I could actually integrate them into some kind of a practical workflow, not just jam sessions.

So far I haven't seen much of anything regarding that, just people talking about how much fun they are to play with.

I can use my Venom synth to sequence and transfer audio directly into Ableton with the iPad via USB camera connection kit.

It has a built in Audio Interface that is class compliant.

@extramedium:
I use 4 iPads - 2 connected to my MBP (running Logic Pro) via Alesis io Docks; the other 2 are used as either MIDI controllers, or connected to my hardware synths (via a MIDI Mobilizer 1 running MidibBridge), to sequence other iOS apps like Nodebeat, or any other CoreMIDI app via an ad-hoc network, the MIDI being recorded into Logic.
Once I'm happy with the MIDI data, I'll record the Audio track by track.

The other way I use them, is the same sort of deal, just on the device itself; Virtual MIDI is sequenced with Genome, or BM2 - the Audio then recorded into BM2, or Loopy, or Audio recorded dirctly into them using Audiobus enabled apps, until I have 10 or so tracks, then exported to the MBP and loaded up in Logic; I then have the makings of a track, and I can add some Reaktor stuff (controlled with KP) or whatever else my little heart desires.

Honestly, there are so many different ways you can integrate an iOS device into a desktop workflow, it's amazing. The most amazing thing though, is the fact that everyone uses them differently; what's important to one person, is insignificant to another - it's really just a matter of finding a way that suits your needs, but iOS is certainly flexible enough to allow you to do that.

It's pretty much revolutionised the way I make music, and I started using 2 cassette recorders and a C64; it's certainly come a long way since then, and iOS has played a huge part - Core MIDI, VIrtual MIDI, WIFI MIDI, and now we have Audiobus - it's all happened so quickly really, it makes my head spin! so little time, and so much to do, lol.

One last thing I'd like to say, is that even if an app doesn't have ANY of the more advanced features, like those mentioned above, it doesn't stop me from buying it; Otomata, being one example - I love it, and use it all the time, even though it's very limited; ultimately, if you can hear it, you can record it.

Think I'll stop there, phew!

@St3rling - Wow! That's awesome. I'm hoping I can pickup an ipad 4 sometime this year so I can do similar things using multiple iPads. How cool. Absolutely amazing apps and they do integrate pretty easy. iOS apps have completely inspired me since first getting the ipad.

Yeah, I also have a 3GS in a SS25, and a 4S (that I occasionally use as a phone!) and plan on getting either an iMac, or MacPro, if they update this year - so I reckon that makes me a super-whore!

I do have a PC as well, because - you know, I'm not a monster - lol.
