FabFilter One... just when I needed a 303 clone...

I was searching for a 303 clone and was thinking I may have to buy one, but as I looked through my VSTs, I saw my never used FabFilter One and thought LIMITATIONS! I fired it up, set it to Sawtooth and started to make it squelch and found a pretty damn convincing 303 IMO.

So any of you out there thinking you need a dedicated 303 clone... make sure to look at what you have first. :P I know that is common sense, but I often get caught up in the lust for new "type" specific plugins, when really many of the powerful things I own can do what I need and more.

Not that I consider FabFilter's One to be powerful, but as a basic one Osc synth, I have now found a SOLID place for it within my arsenal and saved myself ~$100 on buying a 303 clone.

Makes me happy, so I wanted to share and remind all you VST hoarders who can no longer move around within their stuffed VST selection folders. :P

It really misses legato portamento mode to simulate the 303's slides, but I agree, it's a solid little instrument and just great fun to use. Some products seem to just ooze the love that was poured into them and that's always inspiring.

If you're after a cheap-ish 303 clone, try Silverbox as well... Unique sound but still very acid, and the workflow is so fluid, it enables me to get the sequences in my head onto the page without fiddling around with forwards and backwards buttons, etc.

Thanks for the tip, will keep it in mind.

One is a great little vsti.
It's sometimes surprising the sounds that it can produce.
Many times one oscillator is enough

Cypher is very good for those types of sounds.

Sendy,

I have found that Silverbox crashes my Reaper... that was my first try. :P

No auto tune...

I love this plugin and it's in every project I do. Mostly for effects and stuff. I used to own Twin 2 and it's a great synth too but this one is so simple to program and yet so powerful. I think I bought it for €5 at an anniversary or something a few years ago.

It's a fun synth for sure.
Has anybody ever really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

I think fabfilter 1 is a great little synth too and use it a lot despite having twin. I mostly use it for fx but sometimes I have used it for leads. I also layer it with pads and use it for a lower underpinning sound.

A bit of saturation on it and a multi tap delay really thickens the sound up.

This is interesting as besides i got D16 Phoscyon as a 203 emulation for some time i just got Diversion and found the "Acid LP" filter model to sound great. :)
The step sequencer of Diversion seems to be quite nice to.

At the current prices One is around 49 Euros (incl. VAT) and and Diversion 87 Euros (incl. VAT).

I got D16 Phoscyon around the same price as One is now.

UPDATE:
Here is a Diversion patch i created yesterday evening while browsing through the presets (this is not optimized yet):

Diversion - Acidic ARP 2

This is a single instance and no external FXs added.

Diversion got tons of options to shape the sound further.

This is a single Osc (Pulse) Bass sound with the "Acid LP" filter and some filter drive/distortion (no Arp used this time);

Diversion - Acidic Bass 2

Both patches (and also the demos) were created in short time and could be optimized further.

That Diversion patch does sound nice and 303 thick :) The saw one sounds almost a bit too "rough", but the sqr sounds great!

Thanks. Only problem i got when compared to D16 Phoscyon (= 303 clone) is the Attack of the envelope which seems to sound different. I'll try to match this better with the envelope settings and also the envelope modes in Diversion.

Anyway besides any direct comparison to Phoscyon the Acid LP filter of Diversion seems to sound great. Have not tried "Acid BP" yet. There are also some waveforms called e.g. "Square Acid" but i preferred the "Basic Square".

Still learning with Diversion which i purchased yesterday.
