As crazy as it may sound, I haven't been hit as hard as I expected when I recently lost my day job. I know I'm in for some very hard times (Italy is basically falling apart and there are no jobs whatsoever for anybody), but I think it happened for a purpose.

I've been trying to understand what that purpose might be, and the only answer my heart keeps giving me is that it's time for me to do what I really love doing to make a living.

There's not much I love doing, except for music.
I'm not willing to release my music through a label (records don't sell anymore - not with my kind of music, anyway, and I'm quite happy with giving it away for free.), but I keep thinking it might be used for films, documentaries etc.
I believe some independent moviemakers might be interested, if only I could contact them.

So here's my question: does any of you know how to find a list of independent moviemakers and how I could contact them (or any other thing you may want to suggest)?

I'm having a hard time looking for information on the net, as I have no idea where to start from...

Any suggestions/ideas are very welcome, thank you in advance!

Ehem. You sound similar to me!

Indie filmmakers? Now there is my pet subject. They are always interested! But I am sure there are people here who an give you a better idea from the musician's point of view. You can ask specific questions any time. :D

Film industry... you mean the industry where people with no experience whatsoever have 5 million to throw around and Herzog makes $3000 with his documentary.

Start by making an account on Vimeo. There is a place where you can upload your music to be used. Also there must be some film organization in Italy. I don't know about the situation there, but there are always indie guys, video art guys, tv/indie guys, and industry guys. You wanna get these four groups. They will often have their own organization or "hiding place." :D Find them. Talk to them. They have meetings.

Really, in film, no one knows anything. Even more so than music. You really gotta start bumping into people unless you already know them.

Suggestion for meeting independent film makers: visit local film / TV production courses, get to know some students. No doubt some of them will need music for their projects.

Andy.

Yes, but be careful: you will meet possibly the most unprofessional group of people who will never even start their projects. Being able to tell seriousness/intent is crucial in film. Actually, I think that's all we care about in a pitch.

If where you are shares any similarities to here then try this... Find your local art scene. Struggling artists, preferably the spoken word crowd. Go to a few hangouts and see if there are any improv folks that associate with the spoken word folk. Make a few friends with the improv folk and they will lead you to the indie film folk. Maybe volunteer to help out for free a few times while they are filming. Then make sure they know what you are into and have your contact info.

Not a perfect recipe but it might work for you. It did for me.

Mac of BIOnighT, if you are serious about this, if you tell me whereabouts you are located, I might be able to talk through few strings to see where you should head.

Best,

S.

A similar concept is this new site for advertising services:

http://fiverr.com/

Basic idea is to offer a useful service for $5.00. Obviously that's not much money, but the point is to use the service to attract clients for more serious work that pays better.

Wow, I don't even know how to reply, I didn't expect all this
Thank you everybody, you're just great!!!!! I'll go through all the links and suggestions, that should keep me busy for quite a while :) Thank you, thank you again!

schnapsglas, I live in Lombardy, on the border with Switzerland, the town is called Luino, it's on a lke called Lago Maggiore. There's really nothing at all around here, but if you can suggest any lead to follow, I'll be very greateful indeed!

P.S.: Grillo? I don't think so. Nobody can save this country anyway. It doesn't matter who gets the power, in the end people pay the price - this country can only keep sinking until it reaches the bottom. People will never revolt, they've been deprived of rights so slowly and constantly throughout the years that the majority don't even realize we are basically living in a dictatorship, except that we don't have just one dictator, but all the bloodsuckers in the parliament.
It's a sad and irreversible situation, I'm afraid.
I've lost my job, do you know how much I'll be getting as unemployment benefits? 180 euros a month. For six months, and then nothing. Just for food here you need at least 250 euros a month, let alone gas, bills, taxes etc, you can't survive with any less than 900/1000 euros a month. And I'll be getting 180 for six months, and then I'll be on my own - that's how this country takes care of its citizens.

That's why I never want to live in Italy WITHOUT JOB. I love Italy, the country, landscapes, people (that's why I've learned Italian), but without job it's better in Germany, Austria or Switzerland... I didn't want to live without job in the United States, either... 180 euro a month, that's half of the base rent for a cheap small 1-room-flat in a small town in Germany...

But at least you live in the North of Italy, there are much more jobs (and you could go to Turino or Milano) -- in the South there are more than 25 % of people under 25 without job, and I've read 15 % of all people?

But back to topic: Because you make ambiental music, you could make soundtracks for films about nature or travel films etc... There are great landscapes in the area you live...

The percentage of unemployed people is much higher than what you've read, I'm afraid, and northern Italy is now in no particularly better shape than the south... Unfortunately most companies are shutting down, there is almost no one left in my area.
And, alas, Milan (where the unemployed abound anyway)may look close to where I live on the map, but it isn't... The whole situation here is dire indeed. And, by the way, 180 euros is half the basic rent for one room here in Italy as well... I'm very lucky I have a house - it's basically falling apart, but at least I don't have to pay the rent... (it's this one, for the records http://www.mscfoto.it/mscforum/viewtopi ... =26&t=2659 )

Your idea about documentaries on nature is not bad at all, too, and your mentioning Milan made me think that I live on the border with switzerland, and their TV stations and radios might be interested in my material...
Thanks! :)
