Hi KVR...this will be my first question for your excellent forum I am excited for input on my problem...

I am somewhat new to computer music so forgive me if this post confuses..

The problem I am having is trying to figure out the best and most efficient way to master my tracks...when making a song ( I use Fl studio ) to compose then bounce it having my mixer tracks split. then I master where I add my compression/multiband and give it a good finishing coat.

What I am wondering is at what stage of my track should I place EQ, reverb, basically any effect including sidechain compression. Is it better to do all of this at the composing stage or the mastering... or both??? usually I have been using my instrument EQ on both stages but would it sound better if I left everything "raw" in the composing stage and then did most of my effects when mastering...

I realize this is a vague question that is why any tips will be greatly appreciated. Any little tricks producers have found to ease the repetition of all the bouncing

Also I have been using Studio One for mastering and seem to like it better than FL ( I feel the sidechain compression is better ) ....

What do you do? Composing? Arranging? Sampling? Mixing? Effecting? Bouncing? Mastering?

In my understanding mastering is done on the FINISHED track (i. e. audio file) to top it all off. Making a raw mix and then putting effects on it during mastering doesn't make much sense in my POV.

And the sidechain compression -- there are slightly different workflows in every DAW, but why should the sidechain compression in Studio One be "BETTER" than in FL Studio? :o

So im composing a track then once finished i bounce it and re open it again so i can listen to it with lower cpu... at this point should i EQ all my instruments again ??

Also when sidechaining in fl studio i have trouble getting a good pumping effect unless i use the peak controller.. also i dont know how to to have a ghost kick not heard when using sidechain compression. Also i can never get as good of a ducking effecting using compressors sidechained to the kick as I can with the peak controller.

In Studio One I can set it up much easier and using the compressors gives me the good ducking effect like i get from FLs peak controller

From reading your post, you should learn more. Do not worry about things, just read more, unless this is a communication issue. Generally mastering engineers do not even mention M of mastering until they don't even need to care about the technicalities of sidechaining.
It's all about the wavelets. I dream of the perfect additive synthesis.

fine then switch all my use of mastering to finish song that i can listen to and judge to continue to improve it

Ok it seems no one wants to reply since i used "mastering" wrong, so let me fix this up a bit..

My problems with sidechaining in FL are that i can never get a muted kick unless i use peak controller method. I have two kicks on two separate channels with one muted but when I add the compressor and flip it to sidechaining the kick comes through with whatever reverb and other stuff....

Someone told me that i need to learn which is what im trying to do here.. im trying to learn how i can make SC compression sound as good as i can with peak controller...

Also i feel like the peak controller method ends up with different results than when i use SC compressors so do Fl studio users use different techniques for different parts of their song?

Man there is so much more to it... About the eq, compression and all other fx such as reverb, delay, chorus etc.... You apply them on every individual track OR you create a buss track and then send ur individual tracks to it. But for now stick to the first one. So, u compose whatever... Then u apply effects and then when your song is finished and u are happy with the arrangement and stuff, u master it. There are tons of tutorials online to get u started and if u really wanna do this, spend time watching tuts.

Side-chaining in FL Studio is a f**king breeze!

Watch this 3 minute video:

Then practice it. Again and again, and soon it'll be second nature. Once you learn to side-chain in FL Studio, you will be spoiled and you won't want to do it any other host!

I would recommend using this method http://audio.tutsplus.com/tutorials/pro ... fl-studio/ for sidechaining in fl studio.I think you should watch some tutorials on routing channels, submixes, grouping certain instruments, creating sends, etc.Basically watch loads of tuts and if you have a specific problem ask here.
