Hey guys, I was wondering how I can split certain frequencies between mono and stereo. For example I am mastering one of my tracks and I'm using Pro-Q. I want everything under 125 Hz to be mono and everything above 125 Hz to be stereo. How would I go about doing this? I know david guetta and other professional producers all use this technique to ensure that no sub basses are portrayed as stereo, so it would be interesting to find out how to do this.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers :)

MSED is a professional audio encoder-decoder AU and VST plugin for mid-side processing which is able to encode (split) the incoming stereo signal into two components: mid-side pair, and vice versa: decode mid-side signal pair into stereo signal.

MSED is also able to work in the "inline" mode with the ability to adjust mid and side channels' gain without the need of using two plug-in instances in sequence.

You can use MSED to extract mid-side channels, swap stereo channels, switch polarity of the signal

Might have got the wrong end of the stick, but it might work.

Seeing as you are being so specific about it, could you say what host your are using on what OS? That way we can tell you the tools to use. There is no one tool that will do this across all OSs and Hosts.

Just give us a clue ;-). You may very well find that your host has the means to do this via built in plugins.

There are many ways to do what you want. But if I told you my way, you would say, oh but that is not my OS or not my Host etc..

But it's quite easy really. Just say what you're using and someone will be along to enlighten you.

i'm using Ableton live on windows 7. I have Pro-Q and it has the mid-side option. So, if what i'm reading is correct, you say that mid-side EQ'ing will split the frequencies between mono and stereo right?

Well, I won't put words into your mouth, if you don't put them into mine. ;-)

Forget about the mid-side stuff. I might have got that wrong, with what you are trying to achieve.

It's always hard to understand what the other guy really wants to do.

Going back to your original post: "I want everything under 125 Hz to be mono and everything above 125 Hz to be stereo."

I think you might like this:

You may still need to do some jiggery pokery in your host regarding routing, but this plugin will get you quite a long way there.

Some multiband saturators/compressors offer a stereo width control for each band. For example I use Fabfilter Saturn on the master buss often, adding light cohesion. If you switch that to M/S mode you can use the plugin to kill two birds with one stone by making the bass band be all mid signal and no side.

nice, i'll give TP Bassline a try since it's free and see how that goes. thanks for the tip mate :)

You could try MStereoProcessor by Meldaproduction. It has up to 4 bands, so you can process some frequencies differently. I don't see a simple mono switch on the GUI but it should be possible by narrowing the stereo field...

Easy. In Pro-Q select on the bottom "Channel mode" to Mid/Side. Then get a Hipass filter and change it from Stereo to Side. Anything you do in the side is your stereo field. With this you essentially remove frequencies in the stereo field, which is the same as mixing it to mono! Mono is the Mid channel.
If you want to get a really mono sound, use another band with a the widest Q possible, set it to Side and turn it right down.

Of course your signal needs to be stereo in first place. If your sound is a mono source, the mid channel will be blank (doh).

Personally I use either this one http://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/plugi ... ol_v2.html or this one http://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/plugi ... al_v2.html
I think the first one is ample for the job as you've got a fine equalizer already. There are other ways for sure to go about it but I do not know of a quicker way. Also it is $69 at the moment instead of its usual price of $139 also

Hope that helps and all the best :)

Good call, I forgot about basslane! My bad dude  It'll cost a lot less than $69 too, Nice one codec :tu:

+1 for TP Basslane. Although my advice would be to use this individually on tracks rather than putting it on the master track. I used to put it on the master until I realized it was not doing great things for my sound.

But honestly though, it's one of those plugs that works wonders at the default setting (i.e. 300Hz).

Yup, I gave it a test on my master, but it took a lot of power away from the low mids imo. However, when i applied it during the mixing stage, I found it to be much more effective/surgical. As a result, applying it to only my bass sounds allowed my other sounds that were higher in the spectrum to be untouched and really cleared up the track. DON'T USE IT ON UR MASTER! is basically the point i got from this experiment.

Also, after reading some interviews from Deniz Koyu, I came to realize that you shouldn't really have any plugins on your master other than some EQ'ing and a limiter

If the source of the bass frequencies is in mono already (you know where they come from) then there's no need and nothing to gain.

Just follow this advice.
