I have a small midi keyboard that works via a usb port only. No midi ports. The usb that goes out from the keyboard and connects to ipad via the camera adapter thing I bought for it.
I looked at IKmultimedia's IRig which seems to let you connect the keyboard while charging the ipad but it has midi ports whee I can only use usb.
The problem is I have to run off the ipad battery since the cable won't allow me to plugin into the wall for charging and using the usb keyboard at the same time. Is thee some kind of cable or way to be able to connect both my usb midi keyboard and still keep the ipad charging at the same time?

I was a little bit lazy taking a good look at the specs but I found some devices that might be able to achieve what you're looking for:

I checked them all out and while all are cool in their own right, the VMIDI seems to be closest toexactly what I was talking about because it specifically states that it continues to charge your ipad while your using the midi keyboard. That may be exactly what I was looking for.I never saw this one before but it's definitely on the short list.Spiritos wrote:I was a little bit lazy taking a good look at the specs but I found some devices that might be able to achieve what you're looking for:

Yeah, the pricing is quite profound. I don't have an iPad (wish I had) so I never dug into this matter but I found something else that might be of use to you and a lot cheaper:

That looks interesting also. What I did was google "Ipad adapters" and clicked on images and so I have pictures of just about every adapter out there and I can pretty much tell right off the bat if it'll work and if I'm not sure,I can click on the website and read the info.I also emailed IKmultimedia's customer support and explained that I have an Ipad2 and a midi keyboard that "only" has a USB port and no midi ports. The keyboard's usb cable is connected to the Ipad using the camera adapter for Ipad which means the Ipad can't also be charged while playing and I want to be able to play the midi keyboard into Ipad while still keeping the Ipad charging.Spiritos wrote:Yeah, the pricing is quite profound. IF I can make the IRig work with some sort of adapter cable to convert the usb from the keyboad to midi into the irig, that would be good at a decent price. Plus I have about $87 in jam points I could get the IRig for about $35.
For what some of these people want for an adapter, I could get the Irig and the Ikeys too.

I misread the post - it sounds like your existing keyboard is already compliant with the iPad coremidi so I guess you just need a camera connection kit that also charges - like this perhaps?

Funny you mentioned that AMUSEd. Just so happens I ordered that last night.aMUSEd wrote:I misread the post - it sounds like your existing keyboard is already compliant with the iPad coremidi so I guess you just need a camera connection kit that also charges - like this perhaps?

The price was cheap enough that if it doesn't work for me no big loss.
I'm still checking out the other possibilities though because from what I've read, it didn't get vey good use reviews but I ordered it anyway. $12 but the hell. It's worth a try.Thanks.

The biggest issue I have with all these great devices is that they assume your keyboard had midi ports where my keyboard only has one usb port (and no midi ports) that takes the signal to the ipad camera adapter as you mentioned. That all works but the ipad can't charge at the same time I'm using the keyboard because the keyboard is taking up the ipad slot. Therein lies my quest.....Use a USB keyboard to ipad while the ipad is charging at the same time.aMUSEd wrote:I misread the post - it sounds like your existing keyboard is already compliant with the iPad coremidi so I guess you just need a camera connection kit that also charges - like this perhaps?

Also I might add, this is for travel so I don't want to take pack big bulky adapter boxes.

These chinese pieces of crap do not work and break right away.Spiritos wrote:Yeah, the pricing is quite profound. I don't have an iPad (wish I had) so I never dug into this matter but I found something else that might be of use to you and a lot cheaper:

Unfortunately, most of the best keyboards have MIDI in and out. Some, made for mobile use, only have USB (but I would never use them since most of them have mini keys and I HATE those. Others only have 25 keys and I find those useless for playing)The biggest issue I have with all these great devices is that they assume your keyboard had midi ports where my keyboard only has one usb port (and no midi ports) that takes the signal to the ipad camera adapter as you mentioned. This is the best thing I have found for charging while playing AND having complete I/O:

It allows for audio, midi and charges the ipad while using it.
The lightning version is coming soon.

Nope same issue - no USB midi in. By the sound of it all he needs is a Camera connection kit type input that has a charger too (only problem might be not all support more data types than images)Karmacomposer wrote:These chinese pieces of crap do not work and break right away.Spiritos wrote:Yeah, the pricing is quite profound. Extemely simple and the only reason I'm sticking with this keyboard is because it has 37 full size keys and only 21" wide. No frills at all but perfect size for packing in a suitcase. I hate those little mini keys and I don't need mod wheels and a buncha buttons I won't use.

Pretty sure the adapter I suggested should work, it's basically just a CCC with extra USB ports and power. Give it a try first, the only reason it might not work would be if the iPad connector part only supports picture formats but I thnk that's unlikely as it should say so.dblock wrote:Hey Guys, Here's the youtube video of the actual keyboard I have and it being used just like I'm using it.Just can't charge it while I'm using it.
